Hallmark embraces homosexual 'marriage'

PORTLAND, Ore. - Most states don't recognize same-sex "marriage" -- but now Hallmark does. The nation's largest greeting card company is rolling out homosexual wedding cards -- featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers, with best wishes inside. "Two hearts. One promise," one says.

Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal homosexual marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions. The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure. "It's our goal to be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can," Hallmark spokeswoman Sarah Gronberg Kolell said.

Hallmark's largest competitor, American Greetings Corp., has no plans to enter the market, saying its current offerings are general enough to speak to a lot of different relationships.

Hallmark started offering "coming out" cards last year, and the four designs of same-sex marriage cards are being gradually released this summer and will be widely available by next year. No sales figures were available yet.

The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law estimates that more than 85,000 same-sex couples in the United States have entered into a legal relationship since 1997, when Hawaii started offering some legal benefits to same-sex partners. It estimates nearly 120,000 more couples will marry in California during the next three years -- and that means millions of potential dollars for all sorts of wedding-industry businesses.

Hallmark, known more for its Midwest mores than progressive greetings, has added a wider variety lately. It now offers cards for "difficulty getting pregnant" or "going through rehab."

The Greeting Card Association, a trade group, says it does not track how many companies provide same-sex cards but believes the number is expanding. "The fact that you have someone like Hallmark going into that niche shows it's growing and signals a trend," said Barbara Miller, a spokeswoman for the association.

Hallmark says all of its stores can choose whether they want to add the latest offerings.

The Oregon Constitution says voters have the final say over any laws passed by the state legislature. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, however, says they don't.

After Oregon voters passed a marriage protection amendment declaring marriage to be only the union of one man and one woman, liberal lawmakers tried to sidestep the amendment by passing a "domestic partnership" law. As Austin R. Nimocks -- senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund -- explains, lawmakers are not supposed to have the final say in Oregon. "The citizens of Oregon reserve to themselves in their constitution the right to have the final say on any legislation...," notes Nimocks.

The attorney says when the Oregon legislature passed the domestic partnership law, citizens petitioned for a vote to determine whether the law would remain. But state officials refused to certify the referendum petitions -- a step Nimocks describes as "a dangerous precedent for the future of the democratic process in America."

"Right now, we're still considering our options on what to do," says Nimocks. "It's quite clear that the citizens of Oregon still want to have their say on this important law."

Both the U.S. District Court and the Ninth Circuit ruled that Oregon voters have no legal right to have their valid signatures counted in a referendum petition drive. Nimocks calls those court decisions a "tragedy for democracy."

"In America, every citizen's vote should count," the attorney says in a press release. "The court has tossed aside one of the most important rights we have as Americans. The people didn't thwart this effort; government bureaucracy did."

Another Delay with PDC Transferring Land to Developers of Prenatal Killing Center
On Tuesday, August 12, 2008 we were blessed with very good news from Portland Development Commission [PDC] that the developers working with Planned Parenthood (Tim Ray and James Adamson) asked for another delay. Folks every delay means babies saved, so please pray in thanksgiving today. [See More Details on PDC Schedules] The land was to be sold on December 1, 2007 and it is still public land and the land is still sacred and unbroken! Life News also had an article on this.

Main Stream Media Story on Delay [Please write a letter]
Channel Two, KATU, interviewed a few of us up at the vacant lot that PDC and Planned Parenthood want to use to kill thousands of babies a year (See Story and Video). They did leave out a lot of facts that I stated. Please write KATU and tell them thank you for the story and thank them for the story on the obscene website by Planned Parenthood but also ask them why they did not report the following:

1. Why did they not report the number of babies Planned Parenthood kills each year 289,750?
2. Why did they not report that in Planned Parenthood's annual report for the region that the Mr. Greenberg, President and CEO, stated that this building would not only be the headquarters but would contain, "a state-of-the art Surgicenter to increase access to abortion?" 3. Why did they not report that, "the family planning services" are not really for families but for young girls. The annual report listed in item 2. on page 5 shows that over 60% of the clients are under 25 and 23% are teenagers or younger.
