Fordham University Students Protest “Abortion on Demand”
Members of Pro-Life Group March Outside State Senator’s Office

YONKERS, NY - A student group outraged over the New York legislature’s attempt to expand abortion access protested outside state Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins’ office in Yonkers on April 3. Stewart-Cousins is an outspoken sponsor of the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act. The act would make terminating a pregnancy at any time a “fundamental right” of women.

Fordham Respect for Life (RFL) organized the protest with other community pro-life groups. The protest drew 200 people. RFL, whose members have received training from the Leadership Institute, rallied outside the Senator’s office for two hours, displaying banners and signs.

RFL President Brian Stong said, “We believe in the sanctity of life, born or unborn. New York already refuses to safeguard a child in the mother’s womb. Now, the Senator wants to provide abortion on demand without any limits at all. This legislation would further erode respect for life.”

The pro-life students withstood frosty weather to march outside the Senator’s office and advocate “a culture of life.” There was no counter protest, but ten policemen did patrol the area.

Referring to the Supreme Court case that made abortion legal nationwide, Stewart-Cousins attempted to justify the proposed law by saying, “It’s about codifying Roe v. Wade. It’s putting New York state in the appropriate leadership role when it comes to women’s health and women’s rights.” She did not address the fact that the law would provide for abortion even into the latest stages of pregnancy.

According to Stong, the group objects to the Act because it seeks to allow non-physicians to perform abortions, lifts limits on when an abortion can be performed, and does not mandate parental consent for minors.

Stong also expressed the fear that religious hospitals would no longer have the right to opt-out of abortion services.

Stong said that RFL plans to continue promoting life on Fordham’s campus and in the community. The group will present Fordham alumnus Robert M. Byrn with the 1st Annual Respect for Life Award on Tuesday, April 15. RFL also has Norma McCorvey, the “Roe” in Roe v. Wade, scheduled to give a speech on campus titled “Roe No More” on April 17. The group regularly offers counsel to pregnant women entering abortion clinics.

The Leadership Institute’s Campus Leadership Program helps conservative students start newspapers and organizations on college campuses. In the current 2007-08 school year, 70 Leadership Institute field representatives increased the number of active and cooperating conservative student groups and publications to 1,018, with organizations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Focus on the Family Hosts Debate with Noted Atheist

Packed house hears arguments on whether God has a place in the public square.

Noted atheist Dr. Michael Newdow visited the Focus on the Family campus Wednesday night for a debate on whether God should play a role in society. The debate was co-sponsored by the Freethinkers of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Nearly 800 people listened for two hours as Newdow debated Dr. Chris Leland, senior fellow for Christian Worldview Studies at the Focus on the Family Institute. At issue: whether the use of “God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and on U.S. currency violates the Constitution.

Newdow, best known for his campaign to remove the phrase “under God” from the Pledge, opened the evening by arguing that the Founding Fathers specifically kept God out of the Constitution.

“There was a huge change in thinking between 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was written, and 1787, when the Constitution was written,” he said. "There’s no mention of God in our Constitution. As a matter of fact, if you look through, there’s statements against government getting involved in religion.”

In response, Leland maintained that while the Founders may have kept God out of the document, in nearly every other area they relied on their Creator to form the nation.

“Michael (Newdow) indicates that the Founders somehow wised up in the years between 1776 and 1787 that they somehow knew better than to invoke the name of God,” he argued. “If indeed the Constitution was meant to be void of God’s mention, then I believe we’d see that sentiment in other documents and statements from all of those authors across all of those years. That isn’t the case, though; the opposite is true.”

The event marked the first time Focus on the Family has hosted an event in conjunction with the Freethinkers, a group that provides support to atheists, agnostics and humanists. Gary Schneeberger, vice president of media relations at Focus, called it a “historic moment for Focus.”

“Although Newdow refused to go anywhere beyond the narrow issue at hand, Dr. Chris Leland spoke often of the inability to consider our system of government without considering the Founders’ faith and God’s sovereignty,” he said. “He (Leland) spoke quite eloquently and winsomely how his own faith gave him a hope and a purpose no document — not even one as great as the Constitution — could possibly provide.”

Leland said he hoped the debate would open a continuing dialogue between Christians and atheists.

Expelled Movie Exposes Planned Parenthood's Pro-Abortion M.O.

A surprising character makes a cameo appearance in Ben Stein's new movie, "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed."

It's Margaret Sanger, the matriarch of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion operation. Stein notes that Sanger was a proponent of eugenics, the pseudo-science which involves trying to create a master race of human beings through breeding.

The implication in the film is that Darwinism leads to eugenics which leads to abortion and euthanasia.
The public relations machine at Planned Parenthood must not be happy about what's happening at the local Cineplex.

In essence, "Expelled" blows Sanger's cover as a benevolent birth control promoter. Instead, she is portrayed as one of the founding mothers of an ideology that treats human beings as animals and readily dismisses the sanctity of human life.

But what Ben Stein reveals on the Sanger front is really nothing new.

In her book, Margaret Sanger's Eugenic Legacy, author Angela Franks debunked the myth that Sanger was a minor player in the eugenics controversy.

Franks wrote, "Without her, eugenics itself would have become the sideshow, largely limited to the self-important musings and designs of academic societies and conferences." According to Franks, Sanger "brought an expansion of eugenics as an activist movement that was breathtaking."

It is obvious that promoters of eugenics follow a philosophy which fails to acknowledge the inherent value of all people, including those with physical and mental disabilities. But there is also a sinister link between eugenics and racism.

In her book, Franks said of Sanger, "Even if she did not attack racial minorities because of their race, her eugenic efforts nonetheless threatened them disproportionately."

Even today, nearly 130 years after Sanger's birth, black women are disproportionately affected by abortion, with black women more likely to have pregnancies ending in abortion than white women are.

The problem has become so pronounced that some black leaders, such as Pastor Clenard Childress of the organization known as L.E.A.R.N., refer to the abortions of African-Americans as a black genocide.

My guess is that Ben Stein will not win any Academy Awards by outing Margaret Sanger. But he has added some fresh insights to the marketplace of ideas. The monotone teacher from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" may just have something new to teach us all -- especially when it comes to the root causes of the culture of death.

It's a message that garnered Dr. James Dobson's endorsement and seems to resonate with Americans. The documentary, which opened Friday at 1,000 theaters nationwide, brought in $3.2 million. Remove Them From Office

I Peter 2:13-15 In yesterday's Commentary, I said, "Our elected officials are called - by God - to exercise their authority, not to restrict, ignore or punish those who do what is 'right,' but those who practice and advocate that which God has revealed as ungodly and destructive." I also said, by the clear implication of the above Scripture, that those who were in defiance of God's command need to be "confronted" and "removed from office." Strong words some might say, but are they really?

How long must we endure elected officials in Oregon who defy the laws of God and the will of the people? In 2004, defying well established Oregon law respecting the laws of God, Multnomah County Commissioners authorized marriage licenses for same sex couples. At great expense to the citizenry in time and dollars, the people of Oregon - through the initiative process - rejected same sex marriage by a VOTE of 57% to 43%, amending the Oregon Constitution to protect and preserve marriage between a man and a woman only. In the 2007 Oregon legislative session, the Governor of Oregon, and the democrat majority in both houses of the legislature ignored and circumvented the will of the people as expressed over the last 25 years and most recently by amending the Oregon Constitution. When the people again objected through the Referendum process, elected and unelected state and county officials unlawfully prevented both bills from being placed on the November 2008 Oregon General Election Ballot. Remedy was sought, and continues to be pursued through the judicial system. Two options remain for the people of Oregon: First, The Initiative process, to obtain sufficient signatures to repeal both laws at the ballot box in November. Second, The Ballot Box, to remove those legislators who supported and VOTED for these two bills in defiance of the will of the people and in favor of a very small but vocal and well organized special interest group that demands privileges and benefits for their behavior when none are due. What will we do? Scripture is clear from Genesis to Revelation that God rules and reigns over his creation and that includes those who are placed in positions of authority. When those who elevate themselves or are elevated by the people to do what is right, defy God's authority, and do precisely what He and the people oppose, they should be held accountable by removal from office. Prepare to ACT! In Oregon - and other states with leadership determined to ignore both the people and God's 'eternal rules' - Christians must be prepared to ACT! As the Apostle Peter said, "Gird your minds for action." Register to VOTE! If you plan to VOTE in the May 20th Oregon Primary, your completed voter registration form must be postmarked by the 21st day before the election in order to vote in that election. (April 29th) Register to Vote You MUST be registered to VOTE if you wish to sign the 2 Initiative Petitions. If you are not registered, your signature may cause the loss of every signature on the petition sheet you signed. We are encouraging all Christians to request and hold a Voter Registration drive at their church, preferably before the Voter Registration deadline for the Primary. Students Have the Right Not to Remain Silent on the Day of Silence

The annual "Day of Silence," sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN), will be celebrated in many public schools next week. This event encourages students to remain silent on April 25. GLSEN claims the event counteracts bullying, but it is merely promoting an anti-heterosexual viewpoint. Schools can teach students the value of respect without accepting GLSEN’s propaganda event. Many states, like Florida, for example, have laws that require abstinence-based education when sexuality is discussed. In those states the school cannot recognize the Day of Silence without promoting abstinence.

Liberty Counsel is encouraging students to mount a counter-celebration to promote a positive message of purity on the Day of Silence. Students are encouraged to wear white and to distribute flyers promoting sexual purity whenever other students are permitted to distribute literature promoting the Day of Silence. We have posted informational flyers and resources on our Day of Purity web site to promote abstinence. The flyers include information about relationships, STDs and related topics.

In their opening remarks, aired on national television - and before thousands on the White House grounds - both accentuated the profound importance in governments around the world, of respect for human life, religious liberty, and moral authority.

A Hunger for Moral Purpose In an age when those who deny the existence of God, and His 'eternal rules of order and right' cynically use the air waves, the Internet, entertainment, and the print media to denigrate Christ, Christians, and our involvement in the public square, the comments of both the President and the Pope were more than refreshing and long overdue. Called to Confront Those in 'authority' who are elevated to positions of governance are 'sent by him (God) for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.' While the Americans who train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista will be competing for gold medals in Beijing, Chinese citizens are being beaten, imprisoned and tortured for merely practicing their respective religions. The April 15, 2008 rally at the San Diego City Council will be a public plea by concerned San Diegans on the behalf of the suffering people of China.

The rally will be followed up with a request by San Diego City Council candidate James Hartline during the council's non-agenda public comment time. James will ask the city council to issue a letter to the Chinese government for the purpose of ending the religious persecution in China.

The rally participants will also attend the April 15th city council meeting to oppose Councilwoman Toni Atkins' request that "Gay and Lesbian Times Day" be declared in the City of San Diego. The Gay and Lesbian Times is one of the most notorious promoters of gay pornography in San Diego. San Diego City Council candidate James Hartline and other concerned San Diegans believe that the city council should not be endorsing or honoring publications which profit from the sale of pornography.

Unusual Earthquakes Measured Off Oregon

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - Scientists listening to underwater microphones have detected an unusual swarm of earthquakes off central Oregon, something that often happens before a volcanic eruption - except there are no volcanoes in the area.

Scientists don't know exactly what the earthquakes mean, but they could be the result of molten rock rumbling away from the recognized earthquake faults off Oregon, said Robert Dziak, a geophysicist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Oregon State University.

There have been more than 600 quakes over the past 10 days in a basin 150 miles southwest of Newport. The biggest was magnitude 5.4, and two others were more than magnitude 5.0, OSU reported.

On the hydrophones, the quakes sound like low thunder and are unlike anything scientists have heard in 17 years of listening, Dziak said. Some of the quakes have also been detected by earthquake instruments on land.

The hydrophones are left over from a network the Navy used to listen for submarines during the Cold War. They routinely detect passing ships, earthquakes on the ocean bottom and whales calling to one another.

Scientists hope to send out an OSU research ship to take water samples, looking for evidence that sediment has been stirred up and chemicals that would indicate magma is moving up through the Juan de Fuca Plate, Dziak said.

The quakes have not followed the typical pattern of a major shock followed by a series of diminishing aftershocks, and few have been strong enough to be felt on shore.

The Earth's crust is made up of plates that rest on molten rock, which are rubbing together. When the molten rock, or magma, erupts through the crust, it creates volcanoes.

That can happen in the middle of a plate. When the plates lurch against each other, they create earthquakes along the edges.

In this case, the Juan de Fuca Plate is a small piece of crust being crushed between the Pacific Plate and North America, Dziak said.

Matt Barber There's a shakeup in the cult of Neo-Darwinist pseudo-science and that endearing, monotone high school teacher of Ferris Bueller fame is doing the shaking. With his new feature documentary, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (opening in theatres April 18), Ben Stein — actor, economist, presidential speech writer and all around really smart guy — squares off with some of the world's most prominent anti-theist elites as he gets to the heart of the question, "Who are we, and how did we get here?" This is not your father's documentary. Expelled rocks the house both literally and figuratively. It's gripping, music-packed, comically wry and always entertaining. But its entertainment value is yet surpassed by its educational merit. Throughout the film, Stein boldly shines a light of honest inquiry, revealing time and again that Evolution's Emperor has no clothes. In his trademark deadpan fashion, he skillfully debunks the dogmatic neo-Darwinist programming we've all had relentlessly rammed down our throats ever since "Big Science" went bananas over that cute little Scopes Monkey. Unlike Michael Moore's anti-Bush propaganda flick, Fahrenheit 911 — which sold us a lemon with deceptive editing techniques and staged confrontations — Expelled is intellectually honest, cerebrally stimulating and delectably provocative. Nonetheless, there are those who won't like it, not one little bit. Enter Richard Dawkins. Dawkins, a prominent evolutionist, outspoken atheist and the bestselling author of The God Delusion, is featured throughout the film. In one segment, he sits down with Stein for a heart-to-heart. After dancing around several pointed questions about how life began, Dawkins finds himself at a logical impasse with no surplus of sci-fi rhetoric. He's finally forced to concede that, indeed, an intelligent being may have created life on earth. However, that being could not have been "God," but rather, it must have been some organic, alien life form. Of course, that alien life form has to have been a product of "Darwinian evolution." Through tears of wild laughter, audience members watch as Dawkins — apparently grasping the dizzying nature of his own circular argument — turns three shades of red and becomes purply tight-lipped. Dawkins? ... Dawkins? ... But apart from space aliens, the general consensus among the evolutionary scientists interviewed was that all life, including human life, likely began when lightening struck a mud puddle (you know, like Frankenstein but without all the prefab body parts). This was then followed by a series of unexplainable, unprovable and totally random events which occurred over umpteen million years, eventually resulting in ... you. Although Expelled indirectly makes a strong case for the scientific theory of intelligent design, its primary message drives home the need for academic freedom, intellectual honesty and open debate on all scientific fronts. As the movie masterfully illustrates, we live in a cultural climate where secular elitists in academia, the media and the courts chew up and spit out anyone who dares to question the gospel according to Charles Darwin. They're absolutely terrified to follow the scientific evidence wherever it may lead. They don't want to upset the morally relative applecart, which is loosely held together by the notion that we're all just a bunch of monkeys with an instinctive, biological excuse for all our behavioral choices. To them, life's a whole lot easier under the theory of evolution. Without a sovereign Creator to answer to, we get to scoot along and party hearty, free from accountability. Consequently, it's no wonder that Expelled has Darwin's disciples scurrying for the shadows. Those secular humanist one-trick-ponies in the media, throughout academia, on the blogosphere and elsewhere are in full damage control. They're doing everything possible to discredit the film before it even opens. It's even been reported that two major networks are refusing to cover the movie. (Gotta love that journalistic objectivity.) So, if you happen to be one of those evolutionary fundamentalists who were "randomly selected" to evolve with a built-in blindfold and earplugs, and you're comfy with your very limited worldview, be afraid of this film — be very afraid. However, if you're willing to have your eyes opened and are interested in looking at all the evidence, then suck it up, wipe away that Darwinian Kool-Aid mustache and hang out with Ben Stein for a night. What do you have to lose? For everyone else, Expelled is a must see. If you're already a person of faith, prepare to have your faith strengthened. And even if you're not, you can't possibly walk away without at least admitting that the debate over who we are and how we got here is far from over. So hold on to your hat. Expelled is nothing short of earthshaking. And, as the scientific community clearly recognizes, its tremors may be felt for some years to come. Today, the Minnesota State Senate passed a bill nicknamed the "Hannah Montana" Bill. At first I thought this was some kind of joke, but it's true.

The Minnesota State Senate today passed a bill that will make it illegal to use "bot" software to buy up large blocks of tickets. Last year, the state was one of a wave of states to repeal its anti-scalping laws making it legal to resell tickets. The state's House of Representatives are slated to vote on the bill some time in the near future.

As I am sure you all remember, there was huge controversy surrounding ticket sales for the "Best of Both Worlds" concert and parents everywhere were outraged. It was becoming next to impossible to get tickets to a Hannah Montana concert, which is ridiculous!

They are hoping that this bill will help the general public gain access to future shows easier. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Access Hollywood caught up with Miley Cyrus at the "Idol Gives Back"
event and she opened up about how this event is near and dear to her
passion of songwriting.

"Me and my dad [Billy Ray Cyrus] started working with children. Being
able to help them read and learn to write is amazing because that is
something that's important to me, to write songs," Miley told Access."

As part of the charity event, Miley spent time in Kentucky helping kids in need.

"It was great because that is where my dad is from and that's where
I've been raised most my life, so I've been around that a lot. But to
be able to say, 'Hey! I'm back! And I can help this time.' I think is
really cool," she said.

I bet those were some excited kids and she probably gave them a memory
of a lifetime!

Some Reflections on the Anniversary of the Death of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and our Civil Rights Movement
I think most of you know that on Friday, April 4, 2008 was the 40th Anniversary of the death of Rev. Martin Luther King. I believe most of you also know that two of our national leaders who have helped us a great deal, Dr. Alveda King and Rev. Clenard Childress Jr. have told us again and again that we are the continuation of the Civil Rights Movement. I certainly believe this and the issues are still the same.

Are the young children in the womb truly humans and persons made in the Image and Likeness of God? Is the person in womb a baby like we hear in the Lord's word? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. (Luke 1:44 NIV) Yes indeed! the marvels of creation in the womb are precious children and deserve all of our help and attention and prayers. They sometimes are called demeaning things like a mistake or accident or blob just like are dear Black brothers and sisters were often called the n word. It never ceases to amaze me how when a group of people is degraded that a hateful term is assigned to them. My great grandfather who was Italian had to change his name from Dorazio to Coffee to keep his job and was often called a wop like many other Italians (arrived without a passport).

Rev. Martin Luther King and his followers were probably overwhelmed of all of the deaths, and unfair treatment of Blacks but they knew they had to start somewhere. The started a massive boycott of the bus service in Montgomery, Alabama and this effort took hundreds of people sacrificing and it took them over a year to make their point. Brothers and Sisters let us continue to make our focus to stop Planned Parenthood from building a massive prenatal killing center on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in our town. Yes there is much to do in the movement of protecting the children in the womb, but we have to start somewhere and make it a focus. So let all the people of faith form a massive act of conscience and come and stand with us, write and call and be involved. I want to quote one of our team members, Sam Jackson Jr., (picture enclosed) was part of the Montgomery boycott. He often tells us to focus and that people did not think the boycott would work. Sam's prior endeavors worked and SO WILL OURS! Let us focus and let us call upon the entire nation and world to help us with prayers, time, talent, treasure and above all a great deal of tenacity.

Senator Sam Brownback on Kansas has introduced a resolution (S.Res. 483) to designate the first weekend in May of 2008 as Ten Commandments Weekend. Senator Brownback said, "The Ten Commandments are the cornerstone to the faith of millions of Americans of many faith traditions, and are a cornerstone to a fair and just society. We as a nation should take a weekend to reflect on the impact the Ten Commandments have had on the foundation of America’s national life."

that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed. But Moses'
hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and
Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his
hands were steady until the sun set. So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

For the past eight years, every battle that the Lord has asked me to fight, I have said, Yes!" In faith, I have kept my promises to the Lord and I have obediently answered the call when He has asked me to go to battle for His cause. Although I had never really contemplated the idea of running for office before, when the Lord called upon me to run for the San Diego City Council nine months ago, I again did what the Lord asked me to do.

Running for office is a very difficult assignment. It is a very tiring battle. However, the Lord has been gracious to me. Even though I have been fighting a deadly battle with AIDS and I am surrounded by those who have shown great hate towards me due to my very public Christian stand in the city of San Diego, I have stayed the course. I have learned to obey God no matter what the cost, for my real reward is in heaven and not on this earth.

We are on the brink of one of the greatest victories in the history of the modern day culture war. Because there are six candidates in this race, instead of the usual two, the odds of our side winning have been greatly increased. Additionally, in the 2004 election, 39,000 District 3 voters did not vote because they were dissatisfied with the radical homosexual candidates. This time, they have a choice and we are seizing upon the moment by connecting to the 39,000 voters who did not vote in the last election.

We are very close to wining a seat on the San Diego City Council and defeating one of the most powerful homosexual agenda machines in the nation. Despite the closeness of this victory, I know that I will not win this race unless the Christians of San Diego rise up and help me.

I am fearful, so fearful, that this campaign victory will be lost, not because the opportunity wasn't there, but because the Christians of San Diego simply would not give of their time and resources to help me. Last week, I sent out nearly 300 invitations to Christians in the San Diego area, asking them to give me four hours of their time on Saturday to walk my district and talk to voters about me and my campaign. Only four people showed up.

Two weeks ago, I saw many gay activists walking the district to talk to voters about supporting the various homosexual candidates who are my opponents in this race. Of all the things that I have faced as a public figure and Christian activist, there is nothing so frustrating or so discouraging as the sight of seeing a multitude of gay activists handing out literature for my homosexual opponents while I only have four Christians out of one million in the city of San Diego walking the district to help me.

How have we come to a place in our society where homosexuals are more excited about winning the culture to their side than Christians are for winning the culture to our side? What has happened to us? Don't Christians understand that their apathy and their unwillingness to help Christian candidates like me is a sign that we are going to suffer greatly because of our own inaction?

If we win this campaign, the Christian Conservative movement in the United States will experience its greatest victory ever and the momentum for a tremendous political revival in America will commence. If we lose this race because of lack of help or interest on the part of Christians, I really am fearful what God's response will be.

What if Aaron and Hur had decided that they would not help hold up Moses' arms when he got tired? The assured Israeli victory would have been thrown away. That is what we are facing in my own campaign.

Christians throughout America are watching my particular race in San Diego. They are hoping and praying that James Hartline will win the seat on the San Diego City Council, thus giving Christians everywhere in America great hope that real, Biblical change is at hand. However, up to this point, I have begged and pleaded with thousands of San Diego Christians to help me. Only five people have responded by regularly helping me. Five people out of one million Christians in San Diego have regularly helped me in my campaign. I have received dozens of emails from Christians in other parts of America who have told me that they would be helping me if they lived in San Diego. They simply cannot understand why Christian brothers and sisters in my own city will not volunteer their time to help me.

The battle is before us. If we lose this campaign because we could not get volunteers, how will God look upon us? It was God that asked me to run. It is what He wanted. I answered yes to His call. Yet, how many in San Diego are saying no to that same call?

Yes, the battle is before us. The victory is being handed to us, but will we reach out to grab it? Only those who have told God that they want to be involved in the saving of our nation can truly answer that question.

Apocalypse Now/Move Over, Harry Potter
A series of novels about the 'end time' is the latest publishing sensation

THE ANTICHRIST has been resurrected and is ruling the Earth with renewed evil. As a result, the heroic Tribulation Force must struggle ever harder to stay alive and save souls. Who will survive? Who will stay true to the cause, and who will be tempted to betray it?

Those are among the gripping questions addressed in The Mark, eighth in a blockbuster series of novels, which is to be released next week. "I'm waiting with bated breath," said Annie Alfieri, who works at a Coram bookstore and already has devoured the first seven books. "Nothing has grabbed me as much as this."

"It's a great story," said David Tue, a technical specialist who lives in Hauppauge and long ago put in his order for the newest installment. No wonder "The Mark" is making its debut with an initial printing of 2.5 million, and the publisher has already ordered a second printing of 300,000 copies. That puts the novel slightly ahead of average first printings for John Grisham, Stephen King and Tom Clancy, though still behind the 3.8 million initial printing for J.K. Rowling's latest Harry Potter book.

Meanwhile, Left Behind, the series' first book, which features a plotline in which millions of people suddenly disappear from the planet, is still on paperback best-seller lists. All versions of the books, including audio and a children's series, have sold 30 million copies. A movie of Left Behind, starring Kirk Cameron (former teen heartthrob of TV's Growing Pains), was released on video last week and is also a top seller, having hit No. 1 on Amazon.com.

But wait—there's something else that sets this series apart. These are Christian evangelical novels, guided by a prophetic interpretation of the Bible. Their sales in Christian stores are phenomenal, but their crossover success—making it to the top of mainstream fiction best-seller lists that don't even count the Christian market—is unprecedented.

They tell, in fictional terms, what the authors believe will happen during what is termed the Rapture, when those they perceive as good Christians are taken directly to heaven (leaving only their clothes behind), the ensuing seven years of Tribulation, during which the Antichrist reigns, and succeeding events (including the conversion of 144,000 Jews, who become evangelists and whose converts become martyrs), right up to "The Glorious Appearing" of book 12, which will be the last of the series. The publishers want a prequel, too.

"It's been quite a ride," said Jerry B. Jenkins, who writes the books, based on theology provided to him by co-author Tim LaHaye, a minister and nonfiction writer who came up with the idea.

"We thought we could do the whole thing in one book," said Jenkins about the project's beginning, just five years ago. But the first novel covers only about a week in the lives of airline pilot Rayford Steele, who finds dozens of passengers gone from his 747 in midair; his alluring flight attendant, Hattie Durham; plucky daughter, Chloe, and dashing passenger, Buck Williams, a hotshot investigative journalist. Other characters include a Romanian leader named Nicolae Carpathia, who displays hypnotic charisma and a flair for murder. THE STORY just wouldn't fit into one volume, said Jenkins, a jolly-sounding 51-year-old, who jokes that he wanted to call the current volume about the Antichrist's return "No More Mr. Nice Guy."

The first book, too, has its winking, humorous touches, which may help account for its appeal: Carpathia, during his rise to power as the Antichrist, is named Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine; Buck wonders, as things get weirder and weirder, if he isn't "living in a science-fiction thriller." Well, yes, he is, though the authors and many readers see the underlying ideas as far more than science fiction.

Jenkins, a prolific writer who has co-authored best-selling books with sports figures Orel Hershiser and Nolan Ryan, spoke by phone from a small office building he recently built next to his Colorado Springs home, which sits on five acres that also hold a racquetball court and riding stables ("everyone here has riding stables"). Co-author LaHaye, 74, lives in Rancho Mirage, Calif. By now, Jenkins said, his readers include people who pick up the book in, say, Barnes & Noble, and are unaware of what they're getting into theologically. But the authors have gotten very little criticism from those in other religions, who they believe will never get to heaven if they don't accept Jesus.

"We certainly don't intend to offend," said Jenkins. Some Catholics, he said, have complained because several villains are Catholic (although far more are Protestant, Jenkins said). He quoted the biblical passage in which Jesus says, "No one comes to the Father except through me" and added, "If we are to call ourselves evangelical Christians, we believe that."

The authors have heard more from evangelical Christians who don't agree with their order of end-time events, said Jenkins, and from other Christians who believe the Book of Revelation, on which much of the Left Behind series is based, was intended to be symbolic or an allegory about the Roman Empire. The fundamentalist beliefs espoused in the Left Behind books have been around a long time but haven't entered the arena of "public discourse" probably because Christian publishing has largely been "a world unto itself," said Trace Murphy, a senior editor at Doubleday who specializes in religious and philosophical books. (Rabbis contacted for comment about the books had either never heard of them or had not read them.)

Murphy admires the series, he said, as "good popcorn reading. It takes you along the story pretty briskly." Although its success is "a singular event" in the fiction field, there has been a renewed interest in apocalyptic literature and in the book of Revelation both in Christianity and in popular culture, he said, fueled in part by year-2000 millennial interest.

The Left Behind publisher, Tyndale House, also has been savvy about marketing since the books became popular, he said, producing special displays and getting the books into such large arenas as Wal-Mart, Costco and BJ's, where thousands of copies are sold. (The movie, made by Cloud Ten Pictures, has a marketing device that's ingenious: At the end of the video—which isn't nearly as compelling as the book—the star tells viewers how they can sponsor the movie on a big screen after its theatrical release on Feb. 3.)

The excitement seems to have started not with advertising, however, but with word of mouth, said Murphy. "Some books just strike a chord. That's the intangible element in publishing. Nobody can predict when it will come into play."

"Every publisher dreams of striking gold," agreed Lynn Schmitt Quinn of Brightwaters, who has worked as an editor at Simon & Schuster and more recently as managing editor at Crossroad, a publisher of Catholic and other religious books. "Like Harry Potter, it can come out of nowhere, as well as from a best-selling author: a book you can pick up with confidence, thinking, I'm in for a great read."

Other Christian-themed novels also have shown solid sales, she said, including works by Frank Peretti and Joseph F. Girzone, and religious themes have been addressed in mainstream best-sellers, such as thrillers by Andrew Greeley, a Catholic priest, and John Grisham's The Testament. And Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth, a nonfiction apocalyptic book, was a huge crossover best-seller in the 1970s.

But there's no doubt, Quinn said, that the Left Behind series is a phenomenon fueled by interest in the "end time" and "the right authors who can speak to that interest." She doesn't agree with the books' theology, however, and sees danger in introducing an Antichrist from Romania: "Once you're picking any kind of nationality to be the Antichrist, you're labeling that group."

The books' treatment of Jews, Catholics and Romanians doesn't seem to concern the fans, however. And they come from many different backgrounds—as the multilingual official Web site, www.leftbehind.com, attests.

"I've seen people getting lit up, they're really excited" about the series, said Rex Ugorji, who is in charge of sales at New Life, a Christian bookstore in Jamaica with a majority of African-American shoppers. Both black and white customers buy the books, and the store also carries a Spanish version. A friend from London told him the books are selling briskly there, too.

The dramatized version of the audio book, taken from a radio series, is a big seller at New Horizons Christian bookstore in Coram, said saleswoman Jeanne Lun. "I have a lot of customers who are always waiting for the next book to come out," she said, and she has a hard time keeping the kids' series, which features teenage heroes, in stock.

"It's really excellent, really scriptural. This is what a lot of Christians go for…. And if you're not a believer, it's still a good read," she said. Annie Alfieri, who works at the same store, began reading the series before she started there eight months ago. She found them first at Borders. "I was intrigued by the covers, the titles. One day I picked one up and started reading it. I couldn't put it down."

Her 12-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter have gone through the entire children's series, she said, and her daughter has started on the adult books. "The characters just became so real, so much a part of my life. I want to find out what happens to each of them." She likes the decoder kit for the kids, too. Ginny DeMille, a co-owner of The Olive Branch, a Christian bookstore in New Hyde Park, where the series is a top-seller, said she was most moved by the experience of customer Tony Santangelo and his wife, of Franklin Square, who started going to Bible classes at their church after reading the books. "A friend from Texas sent us the first one," said Santangelo, a 47-year-old electrical engineer. "Then we read the whole series." And they joined a class at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Garden City, which brought them closer together. And then, Santangelo's wife, Rosemarie, died unexpectedly last year at age 43 during routine surgery. "My wife pushed…[the books] more," said Santangelo. "Maybe she knew something." Reading the books and then getting more involved at church helped him, he said: "I know she was going to a better place."

David Tue started the books less than a year ago, but couldn't find them all in the Commack Borders near his home. "Now they have them stacked up," he said. He recently bought all the paperbacks at BJ's for his church, Brentwood Presbyterian. Many members read them, "and it was life-changing for two or three. This is a wonderful method of spreading the word."

He can understand, he said, why some people "have a hard time with the concept that there is one way to heaven, through Christ, period. Some people think, I'm a nice person, so I'll go. They don't understand that a relationship with Jesus is the only way, and that comes through in the book."

And that's what the authors want. When he first started writing, Jenkins said, "I remember asking Dr. LaHaye, are we writing to believers, or to persuade or show others the way? He said, 'Both.'"

Each of the cast members did an extraordinary job of expanding their character and drawing us in to their struggles and triumphs. Director Bill Corcoran gave us a much more personal outlook into each character, while not loosing touch with the story telling or pace, "I certainly want to be here where the values are life affirming. There is a message, yes, plus an exciting story."

While the pace of “Left Behind 2: Tribulation Force” may be slower than it’s original, it is well made up for by the incredible script and the engaging plot that unfolds. The special effects are not so demanding that they distract from the storytelling, but when it’s used, it’s used effectively.

Cloud Ten Pictures continues to set the standard for modern Christian productions and this latest installment reveals their true motivation for filmmaking, to present the gospel message of Jesus Christ and to win the lost. A bold and powerful message for reaching this generation.

Left Behind - World War III the latest installment of the Christian-themed films based on the hugely popular "Left Behind" series of books, has begun principal photography in Toronto. Oscar-winner Lou Gossett, Jr. ("An Officer and a Gentleman," TV's "Resurrection Boulevard") and Kirk Cameron (TV's "Growing Pains," "Left Behind" movies) lead the cast under the helm of highly respected director Craig P. Baxley ("Storm of the Century," "Kingdom Hospital"). The feature film will be produced by Cloud Ten Pictures working closely with the creative group at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

"Signing on a respected, Oscar winning actor like Lou Gossett, Jr. is a clear indicator of the new direction we seek to take with Christian film," says producer Andre van Heerden. Left Behind centers on a couple of stories center on one big story. One of the stories is about a airline pilot Rayford Steele (Brad Johnson) he is a busy man his career keeps him away from his wife and 2 kids for a long periods of time. The stress from work is hard on him and his family; he is cheating on his wife. His wife has devotion herself to her church to help her in her life. Another story centers on Cameron “Buck” Williams (Kirk Cameron) a television reporter who is in the middle of an investigative report about a famed scientist Dr Chaim Rosenzweig who breakthrough food growth formula. That would make any type of soil arable. The main story centers on millions of people vanished from the world without a trace. The whole world is in a uproa because know one knows why and how all that is left from the people missing is their clothes. So Cameron is looking into why this has happen but what he doesn’t know the answer is there right in front of him all he has to do is read it and believe in it. Left Behind was a very good movie and also very interesting because of the message it trying to tell. Here are some good and bad points. Good The story was different and had good meaning. Everyone should listen to the message it trying to tell. The marking of the film was different and good. They release it on video first then the theater. The cast was good you may remember Kirk from a popular TV show he used to be on called growing pains. There was no bad thing I could think of. Overall Left Behind was a good Christian film it has a good meaning and should make everyone think. Because of what they were telling you in the film because our life on this world is a short one you never know when god will take you. Every go see this film you will not be disappointed. On December 11, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey held that
the Frenchtown Elementary School District violated the Free Speech rights of a second
grade student when it prohibited her from singing a Christian song in a school talent
show. The Civil Rights Division had filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case, O.T.
v. Frenchtown Elementary School District Board of Education, arguing that the district’s
censorship was unconstitutional because it was based solely upon the religious
perspective of the song.

The Frenchtown Elementary talent show, dubbed “Frenchtown Idol,” was held on a Friday
night and consisted of songs, skits, and other performances by students. Each student was
free to choose his or her own act, subject to a few basic guidelines barring acts using
profanity or involving weapons, alcohol or drugs. However, when the plaintiff chose to
sing a contemporary Christian song, “Awesome God,” she was told that it was inappropriate
because of its religious content. The plaintiff’s parents subsequently filed suit in
federal court, claiming that the school’s censorship violated the First Amendment. The
school defended its actions by arguing that the song had an overtly religious,
proselytizing message and that permitting the song would have violated the Establishment
Clause of the First Amendment.
The district court rejected these arguments, finding that the school’s censorship of
“Awesome God” violated the student’s free speech rights. The court first held that this
case did not involve a school exercising control over its curriculum, but rather involved
restrictions on individual student speech in an activity designed for student expression.
The court found that “Frenchtown Idol was not part of the school curriculum, but was,
instead, a voluntary after-school event in which students were invited – not required –
to participate. Frenchtown Idol participants were obligated to select their own pieces
for the performance, and to develop and rehearse them at home. Indeed, despite some
general oversight by faculty members to ensure that the selected material did not contain
profanity, vulgarity or inappropriate sexual overtones, the school did not maintain any
control over the participants’ selections.”

Since the student’s selection otherwise fit the parameters of the forum, the school could
not censor it because of its religious perspective, the court ruled. The court
specifically rejected the school’s claim that while a song with some religious content
like “God Bless the USA” would be fine, this song should be censored because it was a
“proselytizing song” that “commanded the listener to adhere to the singer’s beliefs.” The
court pointed out that many songs encourage someone to believe something, noting that
school officials had admitted that students could sing songs that “espouse a belief that
it is important to take care of the earth, espouse a belief that it is important to help
poor and impoverished people, and to lean on friends when they experience hardships.” In
light of the fact that secular “proselytizing” through songs would be permitted, the
court ruled that the school not discriminate against religious songs that did the same
thing.

Finally, the court held that allowing the student to sing “Awesome God” would not violate
the Establishment Clause. The individual performances in the talent show are properly
viewed as the speech of the performer, and not that of the school, the court held. The
court noted that “even if the school sponsored and promoted the talent show as an event,
the school did not promote Plaintiff’s – or any other student’s – individual performance
or speech.”

Assistant Attorney General Wan J. Kim applauded the decision. “Schools may not
discriminate against students because of their religious beliefs and expression,” he
said. “While the Establishment Clause bars schools from engaging in religious activities
and expression, this prohibition does not extend to the individual expression of
students.”

Early Show and GMA Deliver Pregnant 'Man' PR

Men don't have babies. Period. Yet in covering the ‘pregnant man' story this morning both the "Early Show" and "Good Morning America" neither outlet dealt with this fact. Rather, both were completely focused on the fact that Thomas Beatie was speaking publicly for the first time and would be shown on today's "Oprah" show. Both outlets also reported that Beatie's story would appear in this week's issue of People, due on news stands tomorrow.

This has been one of those events that tear a State apart.
Oregon has many more things to offer than People who have mental disabilities on a media whirlwind.

Oprah Winfrey, who can take obscure books and with a single nod of approval send them rocketing to the top of the best seller list, has decided society needs a “new definition of what diversity means for everybody” and that we need to redefine “normal.” This was the primary takeaway from her exclusive broadcast interview with Thomas Beatie, the transgendered “man” who is pregnant.

As CMI predicted, Oprah didn’t challenge the falsehood that Thomas is a pregnant “man.” At the end of the program she even declared, “I’ve been on television what seems like forever. You’re my first pregnant man.” In that way Oprah is like the reporters on ABC’s Good Morning America and CBS’s Early Show who also declared Thomas Beatie to be a pregnant man.

What continues to irritate us in the reporting on the radical “trans-genda” is the media’s obsequiousness in using biologically false pronouns to describe the stories’ subjects. Oregon is the only state that allows physician assisted suicide.The Death with Dignity Act was first passed by Oregon voters in November 1994.

The use of narcotics and other dangerous drugs is generally prohibited by federal law except when a doctor prescribes them for a “legitimate medical purpose.” On November 5, 1997, then-Drug Enforcement Administrator Thomas Constantine had announced that since assisting suicide is not "a legitimate medical purpose[,] . . . prescribing a controlled substance with the intent of assisting a suicide" violates federal law.

However, on June 5, 1998, Clinton Administration Attorney General Janet Reno partially overruled Constantine’s decision. She agreed that "adverse action" might be warranted "where a physician assists in a suicide in a state that has not authorized the practice under any conditions, or where a physician fails to comply with state procedures in doing so.” Nevertheless, she said federally controlled drugs could be prescribed to kill patients when legal under state law. http://www.nrlc.org/press_releases_new/release052604.html

Assisted suicide is against federal law but not state law.

In Oregon during 1998-2006, 86,047 Oregonians who suffered from the same underlying diseases died. Of these, 85,755 Oregonians died naturally. The other 292 people died as a result of Oregon's Death With Dignity Act. Which is to say they died after "ingesting" a lethal dose of drugs, that had been prescribed by a doctor.

Oregon's Death with Dignity Act legalizes physician-assisted suicide, but specifically prohibits euthanasia, where a physician or other person directly administers a medication to end another's life.

In 2005, about 1 in 800 Oregonians' deaths resulted from physician-assisted suicide.

Oregon's Revised Statutes specify that physician assisted suicide, under the Death with Dignity Act "does not constitute suicide, mercy killing or homicide under the Law."

The time it took the 292 Oregonians to die ranged from 5 mins to 8.5 hours. These 292 Americans were mentally and physically able to decide and carryout their plans to die byway of assisted suicide. But how many of the 292 would be alive today if they had not drank the lethal drugs? I ask this question because some of those who received a prescription didn't use their 'poison' until the following year.

In 2004, poisoning suicides accounted for 5,800 of the 32,439 deaths that occurred that years as a result of people committing suicide, without physician assistants.

A few weeks ago I was surfing the net and come across a site with a video that documented the death of one Oregonian woman's physician-assisted suicide.

It was both the saddest, and the sickening thing I had ever wittiness.

It showed the woman the day of her death dancing, laughing, and enjoying her life. Among those present were some pro-deaths. When it came time for her to drink the lethal drugs she climbed into bed and told everyone how wonderful it was not only hearing the music but dancing the polka. She said how she wished she could dance on but the time had come for her to say good-bye. As she drank the deadly mixture, one pro-deather standing next to the bed kept telling her how good she was doing. Three minutes later the woman was in a deep coma. Five hours later she was dead.

Watching this I thought how could anyone stand silently bye and watch a loved one end their own life. Then it hit me those standing nearest the woman,urging her on to end her life were not family members. They were pro-deathers getting high off of watching 'another' physician-assisted suicide.

The Oregon woman who requested that the physician write her a prescription for a lethal drug did commit suicide. Though she was responsible for her death, she alone was not morally responsible for her death.

"Death with Dignity suicide" and "suicide by cop" have two important thing in common: cause and effect.

The "suicide by cop" victim relies on a cop to help him commit suicide.

The "Death with Dignity Suicide" victim relies on a doctor to help him end his life.

The big difference, between the two, being police officers are forced to help their victims commit suicide , and doctors have a choice of whether or not to assist in their victim's suicide.

This is where morals comes in to play.

I'm sure most of the readers have heard the saying, "what is legally right is not always morally right." Today, we are experiencing the fallout from laws that have no moral value.

It is the opinion of this writer, that assisted suicide in the name of "Death with Dignity" has no place in a civilized society.

By allowing state government, through its laws, to provide the tools for "assisted suicide" we are allowing the mind set of those who believe in the doctrine of "inequality among men" to thrive.

Suicide, whether or not it's physician asisted, is the needless waste of human life.

I believe that if a person is terminal that with the 'right doctor' his/her life can be less painful and more enjoyable. I believe, instead of looking for reasons for why we should help people die, that we, as members of a freedom loving -society devoted to the high idea of 'equality among men', have a duty to look for reasons that have the potential to give the healthy and the unhealthy individuals the desire to live.

Many assisted suicides seem to be needless

Contrary to The Register-Guard’s editorial on March 22, the Oregon Health Department’s recent release of the 2007 report concerning Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act proves one thing: Oregon’s assisted suicide experiment does not work as voters were led to believe it would.

Last year’s deaths by doctor-assisted suicide are three times the number of deaths in 1997, the year Oregon’s law became functional. While proponents of the law say that only three more patients killed themselves under the law last year than the year before, that is a misleading picture of how dramatically suicides have increased. The number of lethal prescriptions written also has skyrocketed.

The most frightening figure, however, is zero the number of patients seeking physician-assisted suicide who were referred for psychiatric exams in 2007.

The Register Guard’s absurd and unsubstantiated statement that “physician assisted death ... is a conscious, deliberate choice made by mentally sound individuals” flies in the face of all reality. It is a substantiated fact that clinical depression is the No. 1 cause of suicide. Yet last year, not one single patient seeking to end his or her life by means of the assisted suicide law was referred to a professional counselor because of depression!

When surveyed a few years ago, a majority of Oregon physicians admitted they could not recognize clinical depression in their patients. There are at least two documented cases of mentally incapable patients receiving lethal prescriptions under Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act.

“Pain or fear of pain” continued to be the least-used reason for those requesting suicide. Supporters of assisted suicide long have maintained that assisted suicide is necessary for those suffering from intractable pain; however, there has been no documented case of assisted suicide being used for untreatable pain.

Dr. Linda Ganzini, professor of psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, surveyed family members of 83 Oregon patients who requested assisted suicide. Published by the Journal of General Internal Medicine in February of this year, the study by Ganzini et al emphasizes this truth:

“No physical symptoms experienced at the time of the request were rated higher than 2 on a 1 to 5 scale. In most cases, future concerns about physical symptoms were rated as more important than physical symptoms present at the time of the request.”

Ganzini concludes, “Our data suggests that when talking with a patient requesting (assisted suicide), clinicians should focus on eliciting and addressing worries and apprehensions about the future with the goal of reducing anxiety about the dying process.

“Some Oregon clinicians have expressed surprise at the paucity of suffering at the time of the request among these patients. Addressing patient concerns with concrete interventions that help maintain control, independence and self-care, all in the home environment, may be an effective way to address requests for (assisted suicide) and improve quality of remaining life.”

Ganzini’s study confirms that instead of having their fears and concerns ministered to, many patients are being abandoned at their critical time of need and left to indulge their fears by succumbing to a needless suicide.

The facts are now conclusive: Oregon’s assisted suicide experiment has failed the very patients it was intended to serve.

House Approves Global AIDS Program [Associated Press]

FRC's PEP Talk Improves AIDS Bill

Yesterday, the House passed a five-year, $50 billion reauthorization of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) that addresses some of FRC's concerns on abortion, contraception, and conscience protections. By a vote of 308 to 116, members made a costly commitment to prolong what is widely considered a successful program for tackling overseas HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Those who disagreed with the bill did so largely out of concern for the enormous $50 billion price tag. FRC has shared that frustration, particularly since the new program nearly doubles the $30 billion that the President requested. Like many, FRC has called for stronger oversight to be included. If taxpayers are bearing the financial burden, the bill must reflect taxpayer values. Unlike previous versions, this House bill doesn't fund "family planning" services, although there is no explicit ban preventing it. After FRC went to bat for a continued emphasis on the abstinence and fidelity components, the end result is that both House and Senate bills (which is currently awaiting floor action) require a "balanced" approach to prevention. While no fixed percentage is included, the abstinence strategy will retain its prominent place in "behavior change" programs. The conscience protection provision was also noticeably improved. Not only are faith-based groups exempt from performing activities with which they disagree, but the House and Senate bills also state that the government cannot discriminate against religious organizations as they seek funding. While it's an improvement over the original House draft, significant changes must still be made to clarify the language on a number of issues. Until the final version passes in the Senate, FRC will continue its work with Congress and the administration to make those changes and to oppose any abortion provisions that Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) may try to sneak in.

The mayor of San Diego, California has now intensified his disturbing record of attacking Christian Conservatives by agreeing to be one of the featured speakers at an upcoming national convention for the Log Cabin Republicans. The Log Cabin Republicans, a vehemently, anti-christian gay Republican organization, has announced that San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders will be one of their featured speakers during the group's national convention to be held from April 10 - 13, 2008 in San Diego, California.

The appearance by Sanders at the convention is sure to leave many political veterans confused and angry at the mayor of America's 8th largest city, particularly when he needs the votes of Christian conservatives far more than he needs the support of the few homosexual Republicans that live in San Diego. Sanders is currently seeking a second term as mayor during the June 3, 2008 California primary.

Jerry Sanders, a Republican, created a firestorm of controvery last September when he broke a 2005 campaign pledge not to support same-sex marriage. In a move that shocked Republican voters who are fighting to preserve the historical definition of marriage in California, Sanders abruptly broke his campaign promise and signed a city council-issued gay-friendly legal brief to the California Supreme Court. The Sanders-approved legal brief stated that the City of San Diego supports the lawsuit filed by homosexual activists to have marriage redefined to include same-sex couples.

The Log Cabin Republicans have a long history of attacking the values of Christian Conservatives within the Republican Party. Some keen political observers believe that many Log Cabin Republican members are nothing more than homosexual Democratic Party operatives who are infiltrating the GOP in the hopes of dismantling conservative opposition to the homosexual movement within the party.

Recent attacks by members of the Log Cabin Republicans against Californians who are defending the traditional definition of marriage have even extended to the Log Cabin Republicans joining with gay and lesbian Democrats to put pressure on California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign legislation which would legalize homosexual nuptials in the state.

As recently as last year, NBC was reporting on the aggressive tactics of the Log Cabin Republicans to push forth the legislation to redefine marriage: " 'When it comes to marriage, we believe in the fundamental fairness of the American people. There has never been a major civil rights movement that has failed in the United States,' said statewide director of the Log Cabin Republicans, James Vaughn.

"The California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus at the capitol are all Democrats, NBC reported.

"' Log Cabin is working on that,' Vaughn said. 'One of my goals this year is to start building a farm team of Republicans who can run credible campaigns.'

"Log Cabin Republicans are meeting with the Schwarzenegger administration, seeking appointments to state boards and commissions as part of their grassroots campaign.

" 'Although the governor is unlikely to sign a gay marriage bill in 2007, the Log Cabin Republicans are not giving up,' Luery reported. They said they are committed to broadening the reach of California's Republican party.

"California's marriage equality bill, similar to a measure vetoed by Schwarzenegger in 2005, was written by Democratic Assemblyman Mark Leno of San Francisco."

Some of the current activities of the Log Cabin Republicans are viewed as dangerous by many long time Republican activists and leaders. Priscilla Schreiber, a popular boardmember of the Grossmont Union High School District, says that the Log Cabin Republicans are causing great concern for those who are trying to preserve the foundational principles of the Republican Party. Regarding Mayor Sanders speaking at the group's national convention, Schreiber said, "This is one more step towards furthering their agenda by infiltrating the Republican Party and desecrating the planks of the Republican Party Platform."

Mrs. Schreiber, who was reelected in a landslide victory to the East San Diego County school board in 2004, is seeking a third term this year. It was Schreiber's stand against the infiltration of the radical gay agenda in her school district which fueled her popularity and her political career. Schreiber is not alone in her criticism of the Log Cabin Republicans and their liberal, anti-christian agenda. John Steele, a San Diego-based military veteran and long time Republican leader, told the James Hartline Report that he is greatly concerned with the moral direction of the country and the attempts to hurt the military by promoting homosexuality within its ranks.

In a time of war, the last thing that the military is looking for is a lack of cohesion within its armed forces. Yet, that is exactly what the Log Cabin Republicans will be accomplishing if they get their way. Joining gay activists within the Democratic Party, the Log Cabin Republicans are seeking to end the the military's ban on the practice of male sodomy by male soldiers. On the agenda for this year's national Log Cabin Republican's convention in San Diego is a session titled: The Path to Victory.

The Path to Victory session is described this way:

Find out what's ahead in Congress and in state legislatures on issues such as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), relationship recognition, and more.

To put this particular session into context, a review of the Log Cabin Republicans' website provides clarity. The group states: As our nation fights the war on terrorism, we need the most qualified and competent service members, regardless of their sexual orientation. The Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy is undermining our efforts to win this battle.

Joining Mayor Sanders as a speaker at the convention will be lesbian San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. Of great concern to Christian voters in San Diego is the appearance of Dumanis at an event by a group which has the kind of serious discriminatory view of Christians as that held by the Log Cabin Republicans. "How can Bonnie Dumanis participate with a group that attacks Christians at the same time that she is responsible for prosectuting hate crimes committed against Christians?" asks James Hartline, a well known Christian Conservative leader in San Diego.

The Log Cabin Republicans make very little effort to hide their disdain and their discriminatory attitude towards Evangelicals within the Republican Party. On the Log Cabin Republicans' website they describe in detail their hate-filled attitude towards Christian Conservatives this way:

"Defeating the radical right and transforming the GOP will allow gay and lesbian

Americans to achieve full equality much sooner-decades sooner. The radical right

represents the last obstacle on the path to full equality. Defeat them in the grassroots

of the GOP and all of us can enjoy the benefits of liberty much sooner."

To gain a better understanding of just how hostile the Log Cabin Republicans are to the Christian Conservative influence inside of the GOP, one needs to look no farther than a 2006 press release issued by the group after the U. S. House of Representatives failed to approve President Bush's constitutional marriage amendment that limited the definition of marriage to one man and one woman:

Log Cabin Praises Resounding Defeat of Anti-Family Constitutional Amendment in U.S. House : "....This proposed amendment to our constitution is about discrimination. It is about fear. It is unnecessary. It is unwarranted and it should be soundly defeated. Today's victory for the forces of freedom and fairness highlights a growing chorus of Republican and conservative opposition to a constitutional amendment on marriage. Log Cabin aggressively lobbied House and Senate Republicans against this amendment and mobilized unprecedented grassroots support from across the nation, hand-delivering thousands of postcards to Members of Congress asking them to oppose this anti-gay amendment."

James Hartline says that Jerry Sanders is once again making an extremely revealing blunder by speaking at an Anti-Christian, Anti-Republican platform event at the same time that he is seeking the vote of Christian Conservatives in the current mayor's race. "Mayor Sanders continues to aggressively participate with groups that have an extremely hateful view of Christians and those who believe in the traditions articulated by America's Founding Fathers," says Hartline.

What makes Hartline even more concerned about the Log Cabin Republicans' current national convention to be held in San Diego is the group's very specfic attack on Biblical Christianity, an attack that is being highlighted during the convention. Among the featured events at the convention is the presentation of a film titled "For The Bible Tells Me So."

Incredible as it may be, the Log Cabin Republicans are actually showing this hate-filled, anti-christian movie with the director in attendance during the convention. To put things in perspective, Hartline asks, "Why is an alledged Republican political organization showing an anti-christian religious movie at its convention?" Hartline points out that the movie is being shown right after those in attendance participate in a cocktail party.

A review in the New York Times stated that the movie, Daniel Karslake's documentary "For the Bible Tells Me So", won't win any prizes for technique, but innovation surely ranks very low on this filmmaker's to-do list. Mr. Karslake has said that the movie is mainly intended as a feature-length primer that can be deployed in arguments with homophobes."

The movie is so repugnant in its attack on traditional Christianity that it is incredible that the mayor of San Diego would be willing to partner with such bigotry. Hartline says that Mayor Jerry Sanders has now reduced the mayoral office in San Diego to nothing less than the office of anti-christian bigotry.

The New York Times review of the Log Cabin Republican-embraced movie reveals an even more twisted analysis of the film: "Filmgoers and critics who are mainly interested in aesthetics will have little tolerance for this secular sermon. Viewers who got this particular memo long ago will likely deem it condescending, a word embodied by this movie's most unfortunate sequence, a smart-alecky animated short in which a gay man, a lesbian and a booming Voice of God (Don LaFontaine) disabuse a homophobe of his ignorance. The dummy's name? Christian."

Footage from the film attempts to depict all Christians who believe homosexuality is a sin as hatemongering criminals. The director of the film does this by putting together bits and pieces of religious hate speech by various fanatics and extremists. For the mayor of San Diego and the district attorney to participate in any event that features this film under the guise of politics is really a monumentally disgraceful event for the City of San Diego.

The fact that the San Diego County Republican Party continues to endorse Sanders after he betrayed his promise during his original mayoral campaign to not support same-sex marriage is very troubling for most conservative voters in San Diego. The idea that Sanders is now participating with a group that is so hateful in their attacks on Christians, to the point that the convention is devoting a good portion of its time to mocking Bible-believing Christians, makes it really disgraceful for the GOP leadership to continue supporting Sanders.

"Christian Conservative voters have lost all confidence in Sanders to govern with fairness and impartiality," says Hartline. "And voters equallly, have no confidence that lesbian District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis will ever prosecute hate crimes being committed against Christians in San Diego. Her particpation in this extemist anti-christian convention really proves that point quite well," Hartline adds.

Note: This report first appeared in the April issue of Citizen magazine. On Jan. 10, 2005, newly elected U.S. Sen. Barack Obama visited former colleagues and staffers at the Illinois state Capitol, where he had served seven years as state senator. I happened to be at the Capitol that day, too, and a friend and I took the opportunity to speak to Obama, who had not yet achieved rock-star status and was still approachable. We were in Springfield to lobby for passage of the state Born Alive Infant Protection Act, legislation that would require hospitals to care for infants who survive an abortion. Obama spoke against the legislation in 2001 and 2002 and single-handedly defeated it in committee in 2003. School District Complies With Demand To Allow Christian Club Announcements

After much resistance, a school district in Carmel, California has agreed to allow Child Evangelism Fellowship of California (CEF) to distribute flyers to students announcing its Good News Clubs.

Liberty Counsel sent a demand letter on behalf of CEF, asking the district to reverse its unconstitutional decision denying the flyers. We are pleased to report that the district has complied with our request.

Flyer announcements are very important to the success of Good News Clubs. Unless parents are able to learn about the meetings, few students attend.

After-school Good News Clubs teach children respect, good citizenship and moral values from a biblical perspective. Liberty Counsel has won victories for CEF in numerous states from coast to coast and frequently litigates when school districts do not reverse unequal treatment of Good News Clubs.

Oregon Universities Offer 'Gender-Inclusive' Dorm Rooms

Colleges and universities across Oregon are starting to allow anyone to room together on campus, regardless of gender, The Oregonian reported.

At Oregon State University, that means heterosexual and homosexual couples can room together in the new "gender inclusive" wing, which houses 12 students.

Lewis & Clark College and Portland State University also allow roommates of opposite genders. Willamette University and Reed College are trying it out in the fall, and the University of Oregon is considering the possibility.

College officials say they are responding to student demands for more flexible on-campus options, particularly for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Linda Klepacki, sexual health analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said colleges shouldn't be discouraging students from marriage and family — the building blocks of strong individuals and a strong society.

"Research demonstrates that cohabitation increases the fragile state of eventual marriages rather than strengthening them," she said.
