I was able to meet with Will Duffy in Denver and with his pastor on their effort to stop Planned Parenthood from buiding a massive prenatal killing center in northeast Denver. Planned Parenthood just release their annual report and they had an income of over one billion dollars, a profit of over 100 million dollars and they killed 289,750 babies.

Attorney John Whitehead believes the rampant greed of large corporations has turned the Olympic Games into a moneymaking enterprise, making it difficult for human-rights activists to call attention to the continued persecution and abuses in the communist Chinese dictatorship.

Whitehead, president of the Rutherford Institute, says that millions of dollars have already been spent by various companies for the right to sponsor the Beijing Olympics this August. Some of the contributing corporations include Adidas, Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, and Microsoft.

The constitutional attorney says the latest tensions in Tibet illustrate that pouring capitalism into the communist dictatorship has not helped reduce the human-rights violations in that country. "The argument I always heard was that the more [the U.S.] interacted with China, the more they would become like America and revere freedom," he contends. "[But] the opposite has happened. In fact, China is not getting better; they're getting worse."

Whitehead believes President Bush needs to take a strong moral stand and boycott the Olympics, but he does not believe that will happen "because the world is run by greed."

"What we need to do is urge our president to come out and make a moral statement. Evangelicals put him in office, and it's time for him to live up to his professed faith," he argues. "We should not be holding the Olympics in a country like [China]. If we are, at least our president should come out and give a clear voice against it."

Other human-rights activists believe the president should not even attend the high-profile opening ceremonies, which would send an even stronger message to the regime.

Dr. James Dobson told Sean Hannity on Sunday night he is going to vote in the November election – ending weeks of speculation that he would sit on the sidelines over his policy disagreements with the two major parties’ candidates for the White House.

On Hannity’s America on the Fox News Channel, Dr. Dobson told his longtime friend he definitely plans to cast a ballot this year.

“Let me just say that I will certainly vote, Sean,” he said. “I think we have a God-given responsibility to vote, and there are all of the candidates and the issues down the ballot that we have an obligation to weigh in on and let our voices be heard.”

Dr. Dobson, speaking as a private citizen and not as a representative of Focus on the Family, as he always does when discussing political candidates, added that he “has problems” with all three major presidential contenders, especially the Democrats.

As for John McCain, Dr. Dobson responded with a question of his own when Hannity said he had received assurances from the Arizona senator that he would keep the pro-life and pro-marriage planks in the GOP’s party platform.

“Did he give you a commitment about embryonic stem-cell research?” Dr. Dobson asked.

“We did not get that,” Hannity replied.

“But that's an important one for me,” Dr. Dobson explained. “And you can't really call yourself pro-life if you're in favor of killing those babies.”

Dr. Dobson said he would not elaborate on how he would vote in November. He has said that he and his wife, Shirley, chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, have been and will continue to pray that God’s will be reflected in the outcome of the election.

There are two ways to change laws.

One way is tedious. You have to get a majority of citizens to share your views, motivate them to vote for representatives, get a majority of the representatives to vote for a bill, then get the president to sign it.

The other way to change laws is easy. You simply get activist judges to change the definitions of words that are in existing laws.

On March 18, the Supreme Court heard the case of District of Columbia v. Heller (07-290), a case regarding the Second Amendment, which reads:

"A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The ACLU argued that the term "the people" should have its definition changed to mean "the state militia," as the ACLU website states under the section "Gun Control":

"We believe that the constitutional right to bear arms is primarily a collective one, intended mainly to protect the right of the states to maintain militias. … The ACLU therefore believes that the Second Amendment does not confer an unlimited right upon individuals to own guns."

Using the ACLU's new definition of "the people," the Second Amendment would read:

"A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people 'the state militia' to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The absurdity of the ACLU's definition of "the people" is revealed when its definition is applied to the rest of the Constitution and Bill of Rights:

PREAMBLE: We the people "the state militias" of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union … establish this Constitution. ...

ARTICLE 1, SECTION 2: The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second year by the people "the state militias." …

FIRST AMENDMENT: Congress shall make no law … abridging … the right of the people "the state militias" peaceably to assemble …

FOURTH AMENDMENT: The right of the people "the state militias" to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated. …

FIFTH AMENDMENT: No person "state militia" shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment of indictment of a grand jury. …

NINTH AMENDMENT: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people "the state militias." ...

10th AMENDMENT: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people "the state militias."

18th AMENDMENT: The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people "the state militias."…

In U.S. v. Verdugo-Urquidez, (494 U.S. 247, 288, 1990), Justice William J. Brennan Jr. argued:

"The term 'the people' is better understood as a rhetorical counterpoint 'to the government' … that rights that were reserved to 'the people' were to protect all those subject to 'the government.' …"

Justice Brennan continued:

"The Bill of Rights did not purport to 'create' rights. Rather, they designed the Bill of Rights to prohibit our government from infringing rights and liberties presumed to be pre-existing."

In United States v. Verdugo-Urquidez, the Supreme Court wrote:

"'The people' protected by the Fourth Amendment, and by the First and Second Amendments, and to whom rights and powers are reserved in the Ninth and Tenth Amendments, refers to a class of persons who are part of a national community. …

"The Fourth Amendment's drafting history shows that its purpose was to protect the people of the United States against arbitrary action by their own government."

The ACLU's definition is more disingenuous when one realizes the U.S. Constitution already covered the subject of "militias" in Article 1, Section 8:

"Congress shall have Power … to provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union. ... To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia … reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia. …"

In the debates of the Massachusetts Convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution, 1788, Samuel Adams stated:

"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press, or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms."

James Madison wrote in Federalist No. 46, published in the New York Packet, January 29, 1788:

"The ultimate authority ... resides in the people alone. … The advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation … forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition. …

"In the several kingdoms of Europe … the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms."

The ACLU's mis-definition of "the people" reminds one of Thomas Jefferson's letter to Supreme Court Justice William Johnson, June 12, 1823, where he warned of attempts to try "what meaning may be squeezed out of the text or invented against it":

"On every question of construction, carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed."

Hopefully, the Supreme Court will conform to the right definition when they rule on "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

A California court announced Tuesday it will reconsider what Dr. James Dobson called an "egregious decision" to criminalize home schooling in the state. Prisons in Oregon are preparing to offer inmates who claim a same-sex partnership special
privileges specifically denied married inmates, a memo from state officials has
confirmed.

The e-mailed memo from Max Williams, director of the Oregon Department of Corrections,
was sent to workers in his department.

The memo referenced two state laws, Senate Bill 2 and House Bill 2007, through which
lawmakers created legally recognized partnerships for same-sex duos.

"After the New Year, the Department of Corrections will be implementing two new laws
that were passed by the Legislative Assembly and signed by the governor into law during
last year's regular legislative session," the note began. "The new
anti-discrimination and family fairness laws, Senate Bill 2 and House Bill 2007,
establish and extend new legal protections and benefits to affected persons."

The memo said lawyers have been in consultation over the changes, and as a result,
"the Department is reviewing and will be amending its rules as the Department
determines is necessary and advisable in order to comply with the requirements of the new
laws."

Specifically, the e-mail said, the department will change its rules so that,
"inmates that have entered into a RDP [registered domestic partnership] will be
allowed to live in the same facility and unit, subject to the needs of orderly operation,
safety and security of the facility."

That just doesn't make sense, or meet the goals of any "fairness" concept,
according to one Department of Corrections worker who raised concerns about it.

"The problem I have with this is that the department will not allow heterosexual
inmates who are married to live together in the same institution or on the same housing
unit," said the employee, whose name was being withheld from publication.

"The new policy gives homosexual RDP inmates the special privilege of living
together but denies it for heterosexual married inmates, just the opposite of what the
policy is trying to achieve, and discriminates against heterosexuals based on their
sexual orientation," the employee continued.

"In Oregon, if you're a homosexual inmate, only then will you be allowed to live
with your partner.

"Not only is this a discriminatory policy but it will be an enforcement nightmare
for correctional staff. If the RDP inmates are allowed to live on the same housing unit,
are we going to allow them to shower together or … let them sleep next to each other? And
if we don't allow them to do those things will we be sued for discrimination because of
their sexual orientation? The whole thing is just nuts!" the employee said.

The state memo does note that such inmates will not be allowed "to cell
together," but does not define the term.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections initially told WND that married
heterosexual couples wouldn't be offered the option because the prisons are not coed. But
she called back later to say after consulting with attorneys for the state, the
department's response was that officials were working to implement the state's laws.

The memo does include instructions that Senate Bill 2 "recognizes and declares that
the opportunity to obtain employment or housing or to use and enjoy places of public
accommodation without discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, national origin, marital status, age or disability is a civil right under
Oregon law."

The other legislative plan, House Bill 2007, "grants legal recognition in Oregon to
same-sex domestic partnerships," the memo continues.

"Establishing a registered domestic partnership (RDP) affords same-sex couples all
the rights and responsibilities that are granted under state law through a marriage
contract," the memo said. "HB 2007 also provides that any privilege, immunity,
right, benefit or responsibility granted or imposed by statute, administrative or court
rule, policy, common law or any other law to an individual because the individual is or
was married … is granted on equivalent terms, substantive and procedure, to an individual
because the individual is or was in a domestic partnership."

"Because the Department grants certain privileges and benefits to inmates on the
basis of marriage (e.g., the opportunity to participate in a ceremony to solemnize a
marriage, the opportunity to possess and wear a plain wedding band), the Department will
be extending these privileges and benefits to inmates that enter into an RDP in order to
comply with the requirements of HB 2007."

The issue also is the subject of a court hearing, scheduled Dec. 28. The Alliance Defense
Fund is seeking a delay in the law until all votes on the issue are counted, an effort
county clerks have refused to pursue.

An organization called Concerned Oregonians worked on a referendum that would put HB 2007
and SB 2 before Oregon voters in 2008.

But when the state declared the referendum was five signatures short, and county clerks
refused to correct mistakes that had been made in the counting, the ADF filed a lawsuit.

In a new column on the issue, Alan Sears, chief of the ADF, noted that the issue of
marriage consisting of – and only of – one man and one woman is supported overwhelmingly
in the United States. Twenty-seven of 28 states where voters have decided the question,
they have limited marriage to one man and one woman.

"Those seeking to fabricate same-sex 'marriage' have long recognized the American
public is a roadblock to their success. In 1998, after ADF-allied litigation allowed
Alaska citizens to vote on (and pass) a constitutional amendment barring same-sex unions,
the ACLU executive director declared: 'Today's results prove that certain fundamental
issues should not be left up to a majority vote.'

"When the (new) referendum was submitted to the Oregon Secretary of State on Sept.
26, signatures exceeded the required number by more than 6,000. However, the Secretary of
State announced there were not enough signatures to sustain the referendum. The evaluated
'sample' was said to be only five signatures short. If you wonder how this could happen,
you aren't alone. As it turns out, there is a very clear explanation – many of the
signatures were wrongfully rejected," Sears said.

"Signatures were invalidated for allegedly not matching their voter registration
cards, being illegible, or coming from unregistered voters. But according to ADF
attorneys who examined the signatures, several of those kicked out did match, were
legible, and the affected voters actually were registered. In other words, many valid
signers were ignored," he continued.

Clerks have "adamantly"' resisted efforts by signers to authenticate their
signatures. "One county clerk even told a rejected signer, in person, and to their
face, 'tough nuggets,'" Sears said.

The lawsuit alleges Oregon voters from 12 counties have been disenfranchised by
administrative fiat, because their signatures were rejected and they were not allowed a
procedure to restore them to the petition.

Bill Burgess, the clerk in Marion County, confirmed the state had given county clerks
instructions to follow a "precedent" and not correct any incorrectly classified
signatures they may have been told about.

"We also have a legal obligation to follow the guidelines and precedents of the past
and our attorney has told us, and the Secretary of State has advised us that there is no
place in this petition signature checking process for a person to come in later on and
attest that that was their signature," he told WND.

"There's no direct ban [on corrections]," he said. "Well, it's not
specified, and both the Secretary of State and my legal counsel have told me not to go
there."


Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski

The case developed when 54 state lawmakers and Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski rejected
the will of the people to approve and sign into Law HB 2007 and SB 2.

For 148 years Oregon had recognized marriage as the union of a man and a woman, and
voters four times have addressed the issue, most recently in 2004 when they collected
more than a million votes and by a substantial 57-43 percent margin decided to keep
traditional marriage defined as being between only one man and only one woman.

But the newest legislation simply rejects that vote, and even makes a move to address
such citizen "attitudes," requiring schools to seek to change the minds of
those who don't support homosexual duos.

David Crowe, a leader of Restore America, one of the groups coordinating the petition
effort, told WND that there were a number of county clerks who colluded with state
officials who endorse the special privileges for homosexuals to prevent people from
voting on the issues.

"It's political," he said. "There are people who are hostile to us in
three or four counties who are in collusion with state officials behind the scenes, those
who we know are not for us."

Crowe said he knew of the instructions from the Secretary of State to counties not to
make any corrections in the tabulation; he said he had gotten a copy of a state e-mail to
that effect.

John, Hartley, a San Diego City Council candidate was arrested Thursday afternoon after he was seen urinating in a cup and mast******** in public, said Monica Munoz, a San Diego police spokeswoman.

John Hartley, 65, was being interviewed at the mid-city division station before being transferred to police headquarters, where he was expected to be booked into jail, Munoz said.
Hartley previously served on the council from 1989-93, and is running on the June 3 ballot to replace Councilwoman Toni Atkins, who cannot run again due to term limits.
In terms of fundraising, Hartley is running behind two other candidates. Congressional aide Todd Gloria has raised $21,727, Red Cross spokesman Stephen Whitburn has raised $23,138, and Hartley has raised $15,774, of which $12,000 was his own money.
Hartley lives in Normal Heights.

On a Union-Tribune candidate survey, he listed his occupation as a teacher. He said he is the chairman of Partners for Safe Neighborhoods, and has organized 30-plus Neighborhood Watch groups. He said he led graffiti clean-ups and is the president of the Friends of Kensington/Normal Heights Library. He said he was the Sierra Club Volunteer of the Year.
Police were called to the area of Vista Street near Adams Avenue in Kensington about 4 p.m. when they found Hartley. He could not be reached for comment Thursday night.

"Clobber Verses"?

The above is just one of the so-called ("anti-gay") "Clobber Verses" loathed and ridiculed by homosexual activists because they, well, clobber their sin. Many committed homosexuals come to resent or even despise Christianity because it so clearly condemns their favorite sin. Others seek to redefine the faith to get around those offensive passages, but you would have to apply Bill-Clinton-esque semantics (on steroids) to come away with an interpretation of the Bible that does not proscribe homosexual practice. (See Professor Rob Gagnon for more Biblical scholarship on this point.)

There is no singling out the poor homosexuals here: advocates of special treatment for other sins would have to undergo the same semantic gymnastics to gain approval for their errant behavior(s) and attitude(s) of choice. (Strange how you never hear people complain about the "clobber verses" against adulterers? That's because, despite the abundance of philandering in our decaying culture, there is no hugely-funded, organized National Adultery Task Force to defend that sin.)

The Bible is an equal opportunity offender, and Jesus only tightened the standards of holiness (e.g., Matthew 5:27-29), while also making God's grace much more accessible to everyday people — that is, sinners like you and me. The older I get, the more I realize that I simply cannot be "good," in a godly, Biblical sense, without Christ. He is my goodness. I'm pretty rotten inside without Him. That's not false humility but a cold (hearted) reality.

Anyway, if you believe the Bible, God does not give homosexual-practicing sinners a pass because homosexuality is a some "always-present biological desire" (a thesis which is not supported by facts or science, although you'd never know it by the frequent assertions to the contrary by Jeremy and fellow homosexual activists). In fact, one thing we humans have in common is that each of us struggles with something that truly was "always present" in our lives — sin.

No, Jeremy, you weren't "born gay," but you were born a sinner. Join the club. It's got billions of members.

If you don't believe in the "natural" depravity of mankind, try watching young children at a playground, or siblings at home: nobody taught them to be selfish, envious, greedy, disobedient, etc. That's just how they are — why, I wonder, if people are naturally "good" as so many believe these days?

So my answer to you, Jeremy, is that the vices against which I struggle — envy, pride, lust, greed, selfishness, lack of love and grace, and more — seem to have been "always present" in my life — at least that's something I realized when I came to Christ after college and saw myself as I really was. Could it be that the deceitful heart that the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah describes (Jeremiah 17:9) describes your heart and that you could be wrong, and God could be right, concerning what you believe to be your natural "orientation"? (By the way, in a future essay we must address how the Christian Church, like everyone else, spends way, way too much time and effort discussing, debating and pondering the "cause" of homosexuality — further proof that many erroneously regard this as a "special sin" that is not really a sin.)

'Gay' Fundamentalism

Perhaps it was destined to be that much of the debate over homosexuality in our culture would come down to a religious or philosophical discussion. Savvy homosexual activists well understand the power of religion in American life and increasingly frame their arguments using morality language borrowed from the Church.

We have our absolutes, Biblically grounded, and the "Gay Fundamentalists" have theirs. I use that term because honest homosexuality advocates ("gay" and straight) will admit that they have their own set of non-negotiables -- "articles of faith," as it were. Perhaps their paramount tenet (fundamental) is that homosexuals have no "choice" over their "sexual orientation" — therefore there is nothing to be guilty about! (To be fair, some homosexual activists reject the "born gay" artifice and/or admit that they chose to embrace homosexuality.)

Rationalization takes two main forms on the "gay" side: Religious Homosexual Fundamentalists create a "gay-positive" "christianity" — preposterous as that is, historically speaking — while Secular Gay Fundamentalists reject Christianity and assert a new metaphysical reality based on their homosexual "condition." Both camps say their new doctrines are superior to and more up-to-date than historic Christian teachings on sex and marriage.

Despite all this, we committed Christians, we traditionalists, offer our most politically incorrect solution to mankind's predicament: that people need Jesus Christ, that He changes people (2 Corinthians 5:17), and that if we reject Him — and His "free gift" of salvation (Ephesians 2:7-9) — we will one day receive a harsh eternal judgment (hell) (2 Thesselonians 1:6-10). The answer for each of us — homosexual, straight and in between — is found in the atoning sacrifice of the God-man, Jesus Christ, the "one mediator between God and man" (1 Timothy 2:5-6) — who C.S. Lewis described as either a liar, a lunatic, or the Son of God.

That's all I meant to suggest with my list of sinners: not another condemnation of homosexuals but a picture of mankind's universal, egalitarian need for Christ, Who endured the Cross of Good Friday to rise again on Resurrection Sunday, so that we, too, could live forever with Him.

This represents nearly twice as much as they've ever had before ($1.5 million under pro-gay Gov. Paul Cellucci) and nearly five times the amount in the current year's budget ($600.000). In a recent email to their supporters, the Mass. Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus (MGLPC) made it clear that this is now a top priority for them. They bragged that they are "working every day . . . inside the legislature to gain [this] additional funding." They are also organizing other groups, such as the Massachusetts Commission on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth (CGLBTY) to stage a full-scale emotional effort on the Ways and Means Committee to get this money put in. He Is Risen! March 23, 2008 Easter is the day Christians around the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the only person in all of history whose life exemplified His claims and bore out the writings of the prophets who had written of Him for over two millennia. There is no historical record of any man before or since who could remotely be compared to this Jesus, whose character and teachings were full of compelling grace and truth; whose simple touch or spoken Word could heal, calm the wind and sea, raise the dead, and inspire allegiance, faith, and resoluteness of purpose. In spite of a cruel and brutal crucifixion, His triumph over his murderers - and death itself - has so changed the course of history that even the words of His detractors to this day reveal only their foolish unbelief, and darkened minds. As I sat in the pew with my wife and son this morning, moved by the voices and words of the choir as they led us in prolonged worship, I was overwhelmed once again by the profound awareness that I was not alone with moistened eyes and softened heart, but surrounded by many others who knew how wonderful a Savior He is. As Mary Magdalene wept outside the tomb, Jesus spoke to her saying, "Go to my brethren, and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.' NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth, today condemned the unprecedented campaign of vilification against Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern (R), which forced her to have a bodyguard and endure vicious smears against her –– and even her son's –– character based on an edited version of a speech that was put online by a homosexual activist group.

"The homosexual activist movement engages in hatred and mean-spirited attacks –– in the name of tolerance," LaBarbera said. "In the name of fighting discrimination, they are trying to destroy a good woman who voiced her Christian belief that activism based on immoral sexual conduct is destructive to America, and harmful to children. Homosexual militants have even sunk so low as to falsely accuse Kern's son, Jesse, of being a homosexual to embarrass her."

Kern said she has received 50-60 hate phone calls at her home — some at the wee hours of the night — while her husband, Stephen Kern, who pastors Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, has been falsely accused of being a Ku Klux Klan member.

About two weeks ago, the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund published an edited video stringing together comments secretly recorded from a public talk Kern gave to supportive constituents in her Oklahoma district, in which she said, according to the (edited) recording, that:

"Studies show, no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades… I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam. . . They are going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle…. One of my colleagues said, 'We don't have a gay problem in our community'… well you know what, that is so dumb. If you have cancer in your little toe, do you just say that I'm going to forget about it since the rest of you is fine? It spreads! This stuff is deadly and it is spreading. It will destroy our young people and it will destroy this nation."

TMLC Representing Oklahoma Legislator Targeted by Radical Homosexuals

	Thomas More Law Center Announces Representation of Oklahoma Legislator Targeted by Radical Homosexuals Wednesday, March 19, 2008 ANN ARBOR, MI ― Representative Sally Kern has received over 27,000 vulgar, hate filled e-mails, her life has been threatened, her son falsely accused of being a homosexual, her financial supporters contacted and asked to no longer support her, and a leading homosexual activist entered her husband's church last Sunday and took notes on her husband's sermon. At times, as a precaution, a state trooper walks by her side when she enters the State Capitol. The reason � Representative Kern, an Oklahoma legislator, married to a local Baptist minister, spoke at a public Republican club meeting in which she gave information about the political strategies of activist homosexuals to defeat conservative candidates. Her comments were secretly taped, and appeared as a "You Tube" audio clip. Representative Kern expressed her concern that the homosexual agenda was destroying our nation, and that young school children were being indoctrinated into believing that the homosexual "life style" is normal. Her comments caused some of the nation's largest homosexual groups to target her for political annihilation. Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Law Center, a national Christian public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, called Representative Kern "a courageous Christian woman," and announced today that the Law Center has agreed to represent her in any misguided legal action arising out this controversy. The Law Center will be assisted by its local affiliated attorney, Bill Kumpe. Said Thompson, "Representative Kern will not back down, regardless of the attempted hate-mongering intimidation by these national homosexual advocacy groups. Their actions are right out of a play-book developed by radical homosexual activists in the 1980s to manipulate and intimidate the majority of Americans into accepting the normalcy of the homosexual life style. " Continued Thompson, "Radical homosexual groups are attempting to curtail Representative Kern's constitutional rights to free speech, and use that speech as a platform to push for anti-Christian "hate crime" laws. In effect, their goal is to criminalize Christians and Christian beliefs. " Thompson observed, "Her comments represent the view of a majority of Americans. All you need to do is look at all of the states that have overwhelmingly adopted constitutional amendments or statutes defending traditional marriages from the homosexual agenda. Christians believe that homosexual acts are acts of grave depravity, contrary to the natural law and under no circumstances can they be approved. However, Christians also believe one must love the sinner, but hate the sin. " It is a fact that the radical homosexual groups reach into our schools indoctrinating our children. In one Massachusetts school district, without informing parents, kindergarten and first grade students were read the story King and King -- about 2 princes who fall in love and marry. The last page of the book � undoubtedly shown to the children � ends with a picture of the 2 kings kissing. When outraged parents found out, they sued the school district. Incredibly ─ but not surprisingly ─ the First Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the teacher's right to read the book saying, "Public schools are not obliged to shield students from ideas which potentially are religiously offensive. " A 24-page pro-homosexual booklet is set to be distributed to all 16,000 school districts in the nation. The booklet produced by the National Education Association and the American Psychological Association falsely tells students that homosexuality is a "normal expression of human sexuality. " Every year, homosexual rights groups, with the blessing of school officials, sponsor a "Day of Silence" when students and some teachers in schools across the nation remain silent ─ with tape across their mouths ─ throughout the school day. This year it's on April 25. The stated purpose is to make others aware of discrimination against homosexuals. In reality, it is a means of propagandizing and pressuring students to regard homosexual, bisexual and transgender behavior as normal. In the Montgomery County, Maryland School district, eighth and tenth graders are taught that homosexuality is innate─ they're born that way. As if to underscore the point, students are shown a film instructing them on how to use condoms in anal and oral sex. In 2004, Oklahoma voters passed a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as consisting only of the union of one man and one woman by 76%. "It was definitely a battle — a lot harder-fought battle than we would like to see for something we feel is so common sense here in South Dakota," said Kyle Holt, legislative director of South Dakota Right to Life.

Mary Spaulding Balch, state legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, said the effect of ultrasounds is being tracked across America.

"The evidence is that once they see that living human being," she said. "It's hard for them to choose abortion."

Ultrasound technology, which now can offer three-dimensional moving images, changes many minds, said Julaine Appling, executive director of the Wisconsin Family Council.

"The likes of Planned Parenthood … actually freak when they think about this idea of ultrasound," she said. "The use of ultrasound in abortion facilities and in our pregnancy centers is probably the key that we have now to reduce abortions."

HUGE VICTORY: Transgender rights bill, out-of-state "gay marriage" bill, all other pro-homosexual bills stopped in Judiciary Committee after massive pressure by pro-family movement! Homosexual lobby vows to keep fighting this session. Some "good" bills also swept away, unfortunately. On Thursday afternoon, March 19 – the deadline for deciding – the Joint Judiciary Committee responded to massive public outcry and dealt a huge blow to the homosexual movement by essentially killing a whole range bills that the gay lobby has been attempting to push into law this year. Some of these bills (see complete list below) would have severely affected society both in Massachusetts and even around the country. Bill S800 would have allowed out-of-state same-sex couples to get "legally married" in Massachusetts, causing havoc across America. Bill H1722, the Transgender Rights and Hate Crimes Bill, is probably the most radical legislation ever seriously considered by the Legislature, and would have forced legal acceptance "transgenderism" throughout society (including restrooms and schools) and made it a hate crime to criticize the behavior. In all, there were a half-dozen particularly destructive bills that the Committee would likely have passed were it not for your public outcry. H1722 major project of the homosexual movement The Transgender Rights and Hate Crimes Bill (H1722) was the major project this year of the homosexual movement in Massachusetts. This was their next step in their march to change our culture. As described in the media back in January, pushing H1722 through the Legislature was a joint effort by the state's major homosexual activist groups and lobbying groups, plus numerous fringe groups such as the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC). This was a serious campaign. They held (at least) two big State House lobbying events and several letter-writing and lobbying efforts. They heavily lobbied key legislators. They dominated the March 4 public hearing with a well-coordinated barrage of 22 "expert" panels and hours of emotional testimony. The bill had the vocal support of dozens of other Massachusetts liberal organizations, and even state agencies. Gov. Deval Patrick, Attorney General Martha Coakley, and Congressman Barney Frank formally endorsed the bill and submitted testimony in favor of it. It had 25 co-sponsors and many other supporters in the Legislature. So what happened? We went at them full blast. We published an explosive 125-page report on the bill and exposed exactly what it would do. We went on the media – newspaper, Internet news, and radio – and further exposed the bill and the movement behind it. We made sure that literally thousands of you contacted the Legislature and demanded that this bill not go forward. And we made sure the Judiciary Committee got our explicit testimony at their public hearing (including medical documentation!) even though they clearly didn't want to hear it. What does this mean? THIS is the approach that pro-family groups need to take, not the wishy-washy "moderate" approach we see around the country, with the fear that they might not be "respected". Yes, if this is important then sometimes you need to be a little confrontational. And we need to continue to put the pressure on, because this year's fight in the Legislature is only beginning. (Wait till you see our next email!) Homosexual lobby NOT giving up! This is unquestionably a major defeat for the homosexual movement in Massachusetts. They had put enormous resources and emotional capital into this and had not anticipated it would get derailed by pro-family pressure. The homosexual lobby has vowed to try to get H1722 out of study before the July 31 end of the session, and get it passed, although they admit the odds are against it. Bill Conley, head lobbyist for the Mass Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus has announced that they plan to pressure the committee into taking it out of study at some point before July 31, and that they're organizing to further "explain" their position to committee members. But as the homosexual newspaper Bay Windows reported, "Conley said it will be difficult to get the bill passed before the end of the session." And don't worry -- we'll be keeping the pressure on, also! We'll keep you posted. Some good bills also get swept away. Admittedly, we put most of our energy into making sure that the bad bills didn't move forward. But there were several good bills, some introduced by MassResistance, that in a perfect world would have moved forward and become law. We weren't able to make it happen this time, but the Committee did hear our voices and they know we're not going away on these issues. They know also where the sentiment of the people lies - and it's not with the special interests. As we said, this fight is not over. There's still a lot to go. But as we've been saying, this battle can – and will – be won. HERE ARE THE BILLS THAT GOT STOPPED!! STOPPED! Allow out-of-state homosexual couples to get "legally married" in Massachusetts, then go back to their home states - Bills: S800, S1029, H1728 STOPPED! Officially legalize homosexual "marriage" by changing the marriage statute - Bills: H1710, S918 STOPPED! Rev. Clenard Childress just sent be this letter and various readers have contacted me and have asked me to announce that Mr. Obama is in Portland later today Friday, March 21, 2008, at 9:00am at the collesium. There will be a group of pro life people who will have signs to hold.

I do want the readers to know that Precious Children of Portland is focused on stopping the city, Rosenbaum Financial, Ankrom Moisan, Walsh and others who are trying to set up that massive prenatal killing center. That being said, many groups that have fought abortion and impurity long and hard in Oregon from time have helped our effort and from time to time they ask us for help. I think is good that we all work together. As a pastor told me in a phone message back in November after our Fall 2007 Life Chain,

"I don't want Planned Parenthood on MLK, I don't want them anywhere."

We don't want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members." For those of you that don't know Barack Obama became a "minister" of Planned Parenthood a long time ago. He's so good at carrying out their racist murderous agenda against Afro-Americans and society at large that they gave him a 100% score on his voting record. We had a number of battles down in Springfield from many years and it's wonderful to see that they are here today" The first friend mentioned is Cecile Richards who he commends for extraordinary leadership in killing babies who are disproportionately black. The second is Steve Trombley; he is the president of Planned Parenthood Chicago. You can imagine how many of our young women have been victimized and whose pre-born children were killed under his supervision. His third friend he mentions is Pam Sutherland. She is the State CEO of Planned Parenthood for Illinois. America needs to know how much these folks were and continue today to be into the head and actions of Senator Barack Obama. How much did he compromise his own values? I choose here to quote Dr. Martin Luther King from his last Sunday sermon before his death, "There comes a time when one must take the position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must do it because conscience tells him it is right. I believe today that there is a need for all people of goodwill to come with a massive act of conscience and say in the words of the old Negro spiritual, We ain't goin' study war no more." This is the challenge facing modern man. When the challenge came to Barack Obama to call on conscience, he refused. What most Americans would say no to, he chooses to say, YES. He refused to do what the Dream called for, to allow your conscience to tell you what is right and what would be wrong. You may ask why but always remember this observation. Abortion is a lot like slavery. If it was not lucrative it would not have been legal! Pam Sutherland ... of ... Illinois Planned Parenthood ... told ABC News, "We worked with him specifically on his strategy. The Republicans were in control of the Illinois Senate at the time. They loved to hold votes on 'partial birth' and 'born alive.' They put these bills out all the time ... because they wanted to pigeonhole Democrats. ..." Let me interpret. We, Planned Parenthood, told him what to say and how to say it so we could continue to kill infants. Babies just a few inches from birth and those completely out of the womb that we missed! Our "colored minister" was well prepared by Planned Parenthood. Partial Birth abortion, which I will not describe here but know that 80% of Americans don't want this barbaric act practiced here in this country, Barack voted to keep it legal. The Born alive victims act is a law to protect a child that was born alive after a botched abortion. A law that would require that the child would receive medical assistance. Barack Obama voted against it. Yes Barack Obama with an "engaging personality" is being used by the leading abortion provider in the United States to promote and execute infanticide of predominately minority babies. And what are most Afro-Americans saying, "Yes We Can, Yes We Can!" They are ignoring conscience. They are ignoring the Dream! I have a Dream that one day, my four little children will live in a world where that they won't be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Yes, I believe it would be wonderful to have a Black man as president but it's more important for there to be God's man as president. That his or her character would reflect my values, values that are reflected in the 10 Commandments and our Declaration of Independence. Most African-Americans are applauding him for the color of his skin. They have failed to look at closely the content of his character. Martin Luther King , while sitting in a Birmingham jail, without the internet, cell phone, library resources or communication from the outside, penned that famous prophetic letter to answer some local Pastors who questioned his use of public demonstrations. Martin, in a portion of his letter discussed the responsibility of the church to address social issues, he said, "the early church put an end to such evils as infanticide" Martin Luther King wrote from the passion of his spirit. The spirit that was fighting for justice and equality. Martin called infant killing evil. Barack Obama calls it a women's right. Martin Luther King made his observation from a jail cell having been put there for defending the civil rights of those whom had been denied. Barack Obama has made his from caucusing with those who profit from the destruction of babies in the womb. These are men and women whom ignore the silent screams of a lost generation. Can we trust Obama's judgments? I think not. Another quote form Dr. Martin Luther King that would be so appropriate here is "The Negro cannot win if he chooses to sacrifice the future of his children for immediate comfort and safety." It is now imperative that we all hear the words of this great prophet of God. It is obvious that we must reject the Barack Obamas that have placed us in great danger by their ideologies. A position Martin Luther King warns us we cannot expect to win! Yes, Margaret Sanger would love Barack Obama. Her protégés certainly do.

"It’s time to ignite a forest fire of indignation across the nation."

The nation’s largest abortion provider is being accused of racism, overbilling and violating state abortion laws – and Americans are starting to notice.

Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, spoke with CitizenLink about Planned Parenthood’s recent media attention and how it has prompted pro-lifers across the nation to take a stand for the innocent lives of preborn babies.

Q. Planned Parenthood seems to be getting itself into a lot of trouble lately. Why is all this news just now coming out?

A. Three reasons. First, the pro-life movement is doing a great job in uncovering and exposing the unfruitful works of darkness. Second, there have been declarations and affidavits and news stories about Planned Parenthood for so long that finally people are starting to take notice. All of these allegations are compounding the previous allegations. Third, thanks be to God for an answer to the prayers of the saints and the hard work and diligence of pro-life organizations.

Do you think Planned Parenthood is so arrogant that it has become somewhat lax in its practices?

That’s always been the case, since the ‘40s when Planned Parenthood burst on the scene with Margaret Sanger. She made radical racist statements and Planned Parenthood has always been very upfront and arrogant in their eugenics program – both a positive and a negative eugenics program – to exterminate minorities and “unwanted” breeders. So yes, they’ve been extremely arrogant in their principles, policies and practices, and now this arrogance is finally being taken notice of, and they’re so heavily locked into these decades-old practices that they can barely contain the damage.

For example, in California, you’ve got very serious allegations of misappropriations of funds. In Kansas, you’ve got 107 criminal charges levied against just one Planned Parenthood facility; almost half of them are felonies. In Ohio, you’ve got very serious allegations of covering up child rape. In Idaho and other Western states, you’ve got recordings of them (being) more than willing to accept donations on that racist-agenda basis.

Will all this bad press sink Planned Parenthood?

Planned Parenthood is still incredibly powerful. It has a big voting bloc in Congress.

Do you have any hope that the pro-life community can overcome Planned Parenthood’s influence?

I am incredibly optimistic, for lots of reasons. Upwards of 75 percent of young people are pro-life. The number of pregnancy-resource centers in the United States is three times greater than the number of abortion clinics. And all of the advances in technology and medicine and science have proven the pro-life position.

How can pro-life supporters continue to fight Planned Parenthood?

It’s very important that we call local representatives and senator and governor’s office. In the Congress, you’ve got legislators finally starting to take notice. If Planned Parenthood lost $300 million a year from the federal government and hundreds of millions of dollars from state and local governments, they will not be able to sustain their business.

We will have signs, so please come and let PDC know that we do not want them to use the land for killing of precious little babies. For those of you who have come to the site on Beech St. and MLK Jr. Blvd, Bruce Warner and Mark Rosenbaum will be just a few blocks north. MAP

Barack Obama has put his religion back into the headlines, trumpeting the power and salvation of faith and asking a church audience in South Carolina to help him become "an instrument of God" and join him in creating "a Kingdom right here on Earth."

But the Democratic contender's talk on Sunday of breaking down religious and political differences has some critics questioning the Illinois senator's own beliefs - and those of the man identified as his spiritual adviser - and whether his messages of spiritual inclusion and tolerance have remained consistent.

Obama has written and spoken about being inspired by the preaching of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and his calls to "spur social change." The title of Obama's second book, "The Audacity of Hope," which essentially launched his presidential bid, was taken from a sermon by Wright.

Baptized in Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ, Obama has been an active member for two decades, regularly attending services with his family under Wright's spiritual mentorship.

Some of Wright's sermons, which often address themes of white supremacy and black repression, have come under scrutiny by those who interpret them as racially divisive. Such preaching, they believe, polarizes Americans rather than unites them.

"Wright's preaching does promote a sort of racial exclusivity," said Michael Cromartie, vice president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington.

"Statements that suggest you cannot truly understand God unless you are black or poor are exclusive."

Remarks attributed to Wright that were posted on audio files on the Internet and cited in press accounts earlier this year may have prompted the criticism.

"Fact number one: We've got more black men in prison than there are in college.

"Fact number two: Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run.

"We are deeply involved in the importing of drugs, the exporting of guns and the training of professional killers. ... We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God. ... We conducted radiation experiments on our own people. ... We care nothing about human life if the ends justify the means.

"And ... And ... And! God! Has got! To be sick! Of this s***!"

Wright had been scheduled to speak at Obama's Feb. 10 presidential announcement. But after news of the remarks were published, the senator apparently changed his mind the night before and chose the Rev. Otis Moss III, Wright's successor at Trinity United Church of Christ. Moss declined the invitation.

A request for an interview with Wright was not granted. All requests for an interview were referred to the Obama campaign.

An Obama spokesman referred to Wright as "media shy," although Wright has routinely posted live webcasts of his sermons on Trinity United's Web site.

Obama met Wright after college while working with local churches in Chicago to tackle problems of drug abuse and unemployment in inner-city neighborhoods. Wright preached an Afrocentric theology that interpreted the Bible through shared suffering of African Americans.

For Obama, this experience was a spiritual turning point. He had been exposed to various faiths during his life but never formally adopted one until after meeting Wright.

"Inside the thousands of churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lion's den, Ezekiel's field of dry bones," he wrote in his memoir, "Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance."

"Those stories - of survival, and freedom, and hope - became our story, my story."

Wright's defenders say his theology has been misunderstood and taken out of context. They say Wright seeks only to give blacks a sense of dignity and identity, and that his philosphy and sermons are not racist.

"The idea that this preaching is divisive is absolutely ridiculous," said the Rev. Dr. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Church in Chicago, who has known Obama for more than 20 years.

"The job of pastor is to shepherd his or her congregation, and that requires speaking to your congregants in the language and context they understand."

For his part, Obama has said he does not agree with Wright on every issue, religious or political. But that doesn't sit well with some.

"If Barack Obama has really submitted himself to his church like he's claimed, why does he have a different expression of faith from his own pastor?" asks Anthony Bradley, theologian and research fellow at the Acton Institute in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Meanwhile, in a statement on his church's Web site, Wright defends the principles of his theology:

"To have a church whose theological perspective starts from the vantage point of Black liberation theology being its center, is not to say that African or African American people are superior to any one else. There is more than one center from which to view the world. In the words of Dr. Janice Hale, "Difference does not mean deficience' [sic]. It is from this vantage point that Black liberation theology speaks."

This tirade has been hanging around the middle of our to-do list all week, ever since we learned that the $1 million Gov. Rod Blagojevich had promised to help Pilgrim Baptist Church after a devastating fire in 2006 had gone instead to a private school that departed for the Loop.

There's plenty in that deal to rant about: Two years after the fire destroyed the school's rented quarters in an administrative building next to the South Side church, the school hasn't reopened. The Loop office building that houses its new space is in receivership.

The owner of that building was a business associate of the ubiquitous Blagojevich pal Tony Rezko -- see above -- and the head of the state agency that awarded the grant used to work for Rezko.

While the application was pending, the governor granted a pardon to one of the school's officers and ordered her criminal record expunged. Chandra Gill noted in her pardon petition that she had applied for the grant but was worried she couldn't run the school with a felony record. Still, the governor insists he didn't know about her connection to the school when he granted the pardon.

Oh, and the $1 million that was supposed to help rebuild the church's administrative building? The school got it through a "bureaucratic mistake," Blagojevich says, but not to worry. He'll find another million for Pilgrim Baptist.

It's all so outrageous that the editorial practically writes itself, so we apologize for taking so long. When you write about the governor's various bumbling ways, things tend to back up.

That's why we thought twice about state Rep. Lou Lang's bill to strip the governor of control over the Illinois State Board of Education. Though it sailed through a House committee this week, it will never get past Senate President Emil Jones, a Blagojevich ally. It also feels a little retaliatory: Lang admits he's mad that the governor tried to torpedo a $1.2 million state education grant that Lang wanted to bus kids to private Jewish schools around Chicago -- just another example of what Lang calls "the long arm of the governor" overreaching its authority. Blagojevich's office says he did no such thing.

Normally we'd dismiss this bill as an impudent poke in Blagojevich's eye. But we haven't forgotten all the mischief caused by the long arm of the governor in last year's triple-overtime legislative session. He played fast and loose with state finances, neglected urgent state needs while campaigning for his own prohibitively expensive causes and blocked critical initiatives without offering viable alternatives. We have to sympathize with lawmakers, whose job is a lot harder than it needs to be because they have to dodge around a guy who can't get out of his own way.

So they might be tempted to think the antidote to Blagojevich is to strip him of his power, department by department, agency by agency, board by board, starting with the State Board of Education.

Our own frustration with Blagojevich's meddling led us last year to wish aloud -- to great public applause, we might add -- that Illinois had a mechanism to recall the governor. It doesn't, but there are bills in the legislature that would start to create that process. They would let voters decide in November if they want to add a recall provision to the Illinois Constitution.

So a note to House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President Emil Jones: Let the recall legislation come to a vote. Give the people of Illinois a chance to decide if this is what they want.

If you don't, you're enabling this governor and disabling your constituents.

Tax increases by Illinois Democrats jeopardize Illinois' future

The lure of raising taxes for Democrats is something akin to how moths seek light, even if it comes from a bug zapper.

No matter the cost, both in economic terms and human terms, Illinois Democrats can't resist the lure of raising taxes to fuel a larger, less-efficient government.

As Illinois sits on the brink of recession, Illinois Democrats are defying all economic intuition by raising taxes on consumers and employers. In the past three months, Democrats have raised the sales tax in Cook County twice.

This month, they have proposed an increase in the state's income tax, an increase in the state payroll tax and a multitude of other burdensome regulatory fee increases and taxes that will ultimately cost Illinois families and businesses billions of dollars.

These actions come in direct contrast to the action being taken on the federal level to avoid a recession.

The bi-partisan economic stimulus package approved by Congress is designed to provide families with tax rebates to spur more consumer spending and greater confidence in the economy.

The tragic irony in Illinois is that while the federal government seeks to give families more of their money back, Illinois Democrats merely viewed it as an opportunity to seize even more of our money through higher sales taxes.

There is a real human impact to the tax increases enacted by Illinois Democrats.

First and foremost, they run in direct opposition to the recession-fighting plan the federal government is enacting and risk making Illinois the first state to fall into an economic recession.

Secondly, they continue the downward-spiral of job loss in Illinois. Since 2003, when Illinois Democrats took control of Illinois government, Illinois has lost 63,000 manufacturing jobs. Illinois currently ranks 45th in the nation in job growth and we continue to see major employers in Illinois reduce their operations or move entirely out-of-state.

As if the tax increases were not enough, Illinois Democrats are spending our state into deep and massive debt. Illinois has the largest deficit of any state in the nation-totaling nearly $4 billion.

The net effect is a climate that is ripe for recession with Democrat leaders convinced that they have to spend and tax more.

Could it have been worse? You bet.

Last year, Gov. Blagojevich outlined a $9 billion tax increase to fund a multi-billion dollar government run healthcare program. This tax increase would have put Illinois on the fast track to massive unemployment and job loss hurtling us towards a recession. House Republicans led the immediate and swift opposition to this measure, ultimately securing the votes needed to decisively defeat the record-setting tax increase.

However, there is hope that we can turn the tide in Illinois and bring real economic change. There were some successes last year, for instance Illinois House Republicans also led the effort to implement last year's austere, responsible budget that made government live within its means.

This year, in contrast to Illinois Democrats' calls for tax increases, House Republicans are supporting efforts to provide responsible tax relief for families, seniors and job-producers. We are also aggressively advocating for an Illinois economic stimulus package to protect the state from recessionary pressures.

These efforts, coupled with a responsible spending plan, can restore Illinois to a job-producing state and fend-off recessionary concerns.

As our nation and our state face the most challenging economic times since 9/11, we must be responsible, efficient and effective if we are to hold-off an impending recession.

House Republicans will again lead the effort to oppose tax increases, a job and role we have succeeded in the past and will be vigilantly dutiful in the present.

For if we've learned one thing, no matter how bad the impact, the lure of a tax increase is too powerful for Democrats to resist.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich is relying heavily on state-tied donors to pay off massive legal bills in the face of a federal corruption investigation -- a probe that focuses on the very link between state contracts and such fund-raising.

A total of 73 percent of money recently raised by Blagojevich came from those doing business with the state, lobbying the state or facing state regulation, a Daily Herald investigation found.

Government watchdogs say the governor's fundraising practices perpetuate the appearance of pay-to-play graft.

"Obviously this is pretty troubling, especially given the fact that there are allegations of state contractors being shaken down for campaign donations," said Jay Stewart, director of the watchdog Better Government Association.

It is legal to take campaign cash from donors who rely on the state to stay in business or get business. Blagojevich's campaign spokesman says there is nothing wrong about their fundraising tactics.

"Everything that the governor does is well within campaign guidelines and election law and he follows it to the letter," said Doug Scofield.

Financing rules allow Blagojevich to use the money to defend his campaign against corruption allegations, even if he is not running for election.

Blagojevich -- a self-styled reformer -- and his administration have long been in the midst of a federal probe into allegations of rigging state hiring rules and trading campaign cash for contracts and appointments. The governor has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

But one of Blagojevich's former chief fundraisers and advisers, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, is on trial now in federal court, accused of scheming to steer lucrative state investment business for campaign contributions and kickbacks.

In court filings related to the case, prosecutors allege the governor told a fundraiser he had "lots of ways of helping his friends" and that "he could award contracts, legal work and investment banking to help with fundraising."

Blagojevich denies the accusations. And while he hasn't been charged with any crime, he has spent money on attorneys, with his campaign fund running up a $2.1 million legal tab as the multi-year probe drags on. He recently hit the fund-raising circuit again after a lengthy hiatus.

So Blagojevich's continued fundraising from those with state contracts and other such connections has sparked criticism from watchdog groups.

Consider the details of the Daily Herald's findings:

• State contractors chipped in at least 55 percent of the $1.5 million Blagojevich raised from individual donors in the last half of 2007.

• Those contractors reaped nearly $6 billion in state business since Blagojevich took office in 2003.

• Road builders and construction companies were the most lucrative source of the campaign cash -- $455,750.

• Companies or individuals who rely on the state for favorable EPA rulings, utility regulation or professional licensing made up 13 percent of donations, or $202,701.

• Lobbyists gave $72,500 to the governor's campaign and accounted for 6 percent of all donors. Blagojevich has railed against lobbyists in "Gucci loafers" as the reason nothing gets done at the statehouse.

The Daily Herald's analysis reviewed 488 donations Blagojevich received from individual contributors in the last six months of 2007.

"I hadn't realized it was this extensive at all," remarked David Morrison, deputy director of the watchdog Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, which tracks campaign donations and pushes fundraising restrictions.

Morrison says the heavy reliance on contractors and regulated entities suggests they must be one of the few sources of campaign cash left for a governor whose poll ratings continue to plummet.

"There is a broad perception that if you want something from the governor, you need to pony up to the campaign," Morrison said. "These numbers suggest that may be even more pervasive than we had thought."

Though Blagojevich has not made a similar pledge, several statewide elected officials have vowed not to take campaign donations from contractors due to at the very least the appearance of impropriety. And, after several scandals in his own administration, Chicago Mayor M. Richard Daley said he would stop taking money from contractors.

Blagojevich says he agrees with the concept but wants to get a state law passed making the practice illegal before he takes the same step. Legislation banning the practice has been tied up in the Blagojevich-allied state Senate for months and appears to currently have little chance of approval.

The most recently raised cash is largely going to pay legal bills from the same law firm that defended former Gov. George Ryan in his corruption trial. Ryan was found guilty and now is serving a 6½-year prison sentence.

Ironically, Blagojevich won his governor campaigns, in part, by tying his opponents to the maligned former governor and promising reform.

The Daily Herald's findings show an ongoing pattern in Blagojevich's fund-raising. The governor has been one of the most prolific campaign fund-raisers in Illinois history, amassing war chests of more than $30 million at times.

A 2005 Daily Herald probe found:

• Nearly 20 percent of Blagojevich appointees were campaign donors.

• More than 80 percent of tollway contractors had donated to Blagojevich's campaign.

• And more than 320 companies doing $2.6 billion in state business gave $3.8 million to the governor.

Still, Scofield says there is no corrupt or intentional connection between the governor's fundraising and state business. He said the governor does not specifically target contractors or lobbyists for campaign cash.

"People donate to the governor's campaign for a clear reason: Because they are supportive of the governor and the things he is trying to do for the state of Illinois," Scofield said.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich is relying heavily on state-tied donors to pay off massive legal bills in the face of a federal corruption investigation -- a probe that focuses on the very link between state contracts and such fund-raising.

A total of 73 percent of money recently raised by Blagojevich came from those doing business with the state, lobbying the state or facing state regulation, a Daily Herald investigation found.

Government watchdogs say the governor's fundraising practices perpetuate the appearance of pay-to-play graft.

"Obviously this is pretty troubling, especially given the fact that there are allegations of state contractors being shaken down for campaign donations," said Jay Stewart, director of the watchdog Better Government Association.

It is legal to take campaign cash from donors who rely on the state to stay in business or get business. Blagojevich's campaign spokesman says there is nothing wrong about their fundraising tactics.

"Everything that the governor does is well within campaign guidelines and election law and he follows it to the letter," said Doug Scofield.

Financing rules allow Blagojevich to use the money to defend his campaign against corruption allegations, even if he is not running for election.

Blagojevich -- a self-styled reformer -- and his administration have long been in the midst of a federal probe into allegations of rigging state hiring rules and trading campaign cash for contracts and appointments. The governor has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

But one of Blagojevich's former chief fundraisers and advisers, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, is on trial now in federal court, accused of scheming to steer lucrative state investment business for campaign contributions and kickbacks.

In court filings related to the case, prosecutors allege the governor told a fundraiser he had "lots of ways of helping his friends" and that "he could award contracts, legal work and investment banking to help with fundraising."

Blagojevich denies the accusations. And while he hasn't been charged with any crime, he has spent money on attorneys, with his campaign fund running up a $2.1 million legal tab as the multi-year probe drags on. He recently hit the fund-raising circuit again after a lengthy hiatus.

So Blagojevich's continued fundraising from those with state contracts and other such connections has sparked criticism from watchdog groups.

Consider the details of the Daily Herald's findings:

• State contractors chipped in at least 55 percent of the $1.5 million Blagojevich raised from individual donors in the last half of 2007.

• Those contractors reaped nearly $6 billion in state business since Blagojevich took office in 2003.

• Road builders and construction companies were the most lucrative source of the campaign cash -- $455,750.

• Companies or individuals who rely on the state for favorable EPA rulings, utility regulation or professional licensing made up 13 percent of donations, or $202,701.

• Lobbyists gave $72,500 to the governor's campaign and accounted for 6 percent of all donors. Blagojevich has railed against lobbyists in "Gucci loafers" as the reason nothing gets done at the statehouse.

The Daily Herald's analysis reviewed 488 donations Blagojevich received from individual contributors in the last six months of 2007.

"I hadn't realized it was this extensive at all," remarked David Morrison, deputy director of the watchdog Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, which tracks campaign donations and pushes fundraising restrictions.

Morrison says the heavy reliance on contractors and regulated entities suggests they must be one of the few sources of campaign cash left for a governor whose poll ratings continue to plummet.

"There is a broad perception that if you want something from the governor, you need to pony up to the campaign," Morrison said. "These numbers suggest that may be even more pervasive than we had thought."

Though Blagojevich has not made a similar pledge, several statewide elected officials have vowed not to take campaign donations from contractors due to at the very least the appearance of impropriety. And, after several scandals in his own administration, Chicago Mayor M. Richard Daley said he would stop taking money from contractors.

Blagojevich says he agrees with the concept but wants to get a state law passed making the practice illegal before he takes the same step. Legislation banning the practice has been tied up in the Blagojevich-allied state Senate for months and appears to currently have little chance of approval.

The most recently raised cash is largely going to pay legal bills from the same law firm that defended former Gov. George Ryan in his corruption trial. Ryan was found guilty and now is serving a 6½-year prison sentence.

Ironically, Blagojevich won his governor campaigns, in part, by tying his opponents to the maligned former governor and promising reform.

The Daily Herald's findings show an ongoing pattern in Blagojevich's fund-raising. The governor has been one of the most prolific campaign fund-raisers in Illinois history, amassing war chests of more than $30 million at times.

A 2005 Daily Herald probe found:

• Nearly 20 percent of Blagojevich appointees were campaign donors.

• More than 80 percent of tollway contractors had donated to Blagojevich's campaign.

• And more than 320 companies doing $2.6 billion in state business gave $3.8 million to the governor.

Still, Scofield says there is no corrupt or intentional connection between the governor's fundraising and state business. He said the governor does not specifically target contractors or lobbyists for campaign cash.

A few weeks ago, state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias called Gov. Blagojevich the "anti-Obama."

Giannoulias was contrasting Sen. Barack Obama's style with Blagojevich's: A uniter vs. a divider. Giannoulias couldn't have been more right.

You undoubtedly read in the Sun-Times that Blagojevich pardoned a woman whose private school soon after received a million-dollar grant that was supposedly intended for the South Side's fire-ravaged Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Late last week, the Sun-Times also reported that Blagojevich had expunged the record of a woman, Sharon Latiker, who was gearing up to run against House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie. Blagojevich and House Speaker Michael Madigan are bitter enemies, so the expungement was seen by some as helping Latiker's campaign against Madigan's majority leader.

It turns out that the two women Blagojevich pardoned/expunged were both African-Americans. The Sun-Times story on Latiker never mentioned her race, and no photo was included. But that didn't stop the governor from sending out one of his top aides to play the race card.

Deputy Gov. Louanner Peters was former Congressman Gus Savage's chief of staff for 10 years. Savage was the guy who blamed his 1992 Democratic primary loss on the "white racist press and the racist, reactionary Jewish misleaders."

Anyway, Peters held a news conference last Friday and invited several African-American leaders to attend. She told reporters that the Sun-Times story on Latiker was either ginned up by Madigan or represented a media "focus on African-American women. It has to be one or the other."

The Sun-Times developed the story without Madigan's input, so that left just race.

Meanwhile, former Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro let fly this week with some seriously goofy comments about how Obama was "lucky" to be a black man. Ferraro claimed that Obama's race was giving him an unfair advantage over Hillary Clinton. This was no slip of the tongue. Ferraro had made pretty much the same exact claim twice before and then reacted angrily when called out by reporters, claiming that anyone who criticized her was acting in a racist manner.

Obama's campaign was initially slow to respond to Ferraro's bizarre remarks, but eventually Obama addressed the issue during a Chicago news conference.

Instead of surrounding himself with African-American leaders, as Peters did, Obama scheduled a news conference to announce an endorsement by several retired military leaders. The backdrop to his event was a group of older, (mostly) white men. Obama refused to characterize Ferraro's remarks as racist. Instead, he said they were "ridiculous." Which they were.

Blagojevich is a fading politician facing the possibility of indictment and is therefore desperate to hold onto the one voting bloc that has yet to completely turn against him. Claiming reporters have racist motives is a tried-and-true and often supremely cynical formula for cranking up the base, but its success may be diminishing in the "Obama Age." Still, it's all Blagojevich has left, so he used it.

Obama has a different task. Check out this quote of a 63-yearold Ohio woman from a recent Bloomberg story: "If Obama gets in, it's going to be a black thing, and it's going to be all blacks for blacks."

America obviously still has more than its share of racists. Obama has to show that he's "post-racial" to allay the fears of people like that Ohio woman. He took another step in that direction this week.

Ferraro may have done "Sen. Lucky" a favor. Peters only reinforced the governor's image of desperation.

At the end of the 2nd hearing he strongly endorsed Planned Parenthood.

On December 11, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey held that the Frenchtown Elementary School District violated the Free Speech rights of a second grade student when it prohibited her from singing a Christian song in a school talent show. The Civil Rights Division had filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case, O.T. v. Frenchtown Elementary School District Board of Education, arguing that the district’s censorship was unconstitutional because it was based solely upon the religious perspective of the song.

The Frenchtown Elementary talent show, dubbed “Frenchtown Idol,” was held on a Friday night and consisted of songs, skits, and other performances by students. Each student was free to choose his or her own act, subject to a few basic guidelines barring acts using profanity or involving weapons, alcohol or drugs. However, when the plaintiff chose to sing a contemporary Christian song, “Awesome God,” she was told that it was inappropriate because of its religious content. The plaintiff’s parents subsequently filed suit in federal court, claiming that the school’s censorship violated the First Amendment. The school defended its actions by arguing that the song had an overtly religious, proselytizing message and that permitting the song would have violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

The district court rejected these arguments, finding that the school’s censorship of “Awesome God” violated the student’s free speech rights. The court first held that this case did not involve a school exercising control over its curriculum, but rather involved restrictions on individual student speech in an activity designed for student expression. The court found that “Frenchtown Idol was not part of the school curriculum, but was, instead, a voluntary after-school event in which students were invited – not required – to participate. Frenchtown Idol participants were obligated to select their own pieces for the performance, and to develop and rehearse them at home. Indeed, despite some general oversight by faculty members to ensure that the selected material did not contain profanity, vulgarity or inappropriate sexual overtones, the school did not maintain any control over the participants’ selections.”

Since the student’s selection otherwise fit the parameters of the forum, the school could not censor it because of its religious perspective, the court ruled. The court specifically rejected the school’s claim that while a song with some religious content like “God Bless the USA” would be fine, this song should be censored because it was a “proselytizing song” that “commanded the listener to adhere to the singer’s beliefs.” The court pointed out that many songs encourage someone to believe something, noting that school officials had admitted that students could sing songs that “espouse a belief that it is important to take care of the earth, espouse a belief that it is important to help poor and impoverished people, and to lean on friends when they experience hardships.” In light of the fact that secular “proselytizing” through songs would be permitted, the court ruled that the school not discriminate against religious songs that did the same thing.

Finally, the court held that allowing the student to sing “Awesome God” would not violate the Establishment Clause. The individual performances in the talent show are properly viewed as the speech of the performer, and not that of the school, the court held. The court noted that “even if the school sponsored and promoted the talent show as an event, the school did not promote Plaintiff’s – or any other student’s – individual performance or speech.”

Assistant Attorney General Wan J. Kim applauded the decision. “Schools may not discriminate against students because of their religious beliefs and expression,” he said. “While the Establishment Clause bars schools from engaging in religious activities and expression, this prohibition does not extend to the individual expression of students.”

A critical part of the First Freedom Project is to educate religious, community and civil rights leaders, attorneys, and government officials about the religious freedom laws enforced by the Department of Justice. To accomplish this, the Department has launched a series of regional seminars entitled "Federal Laws Protecting Religious Freedom."

These seminars will feature presentations by senior Civil Rights Division attorneys on the full range of religious liberty rights protected by the Department of Justice.

Seminars have been held in Kansas City, Missouri on March 29, 2007, Tampa, Florida on April 25, 2007, Seattle, Washington on May 10, 2007, Brooklyn, New York on July 26, 2007, Chicago, Illinois on September 19, 2007, Los Angeles, California on November 29, 2007, and Washington, D.C. on January 30, 2008.

The meaning of these verses for Oregonians in 2008 Oregon is not the "Promised Land" nor are we Christians the Israelites, but we are sons of God through Jesus Christ according to the promise of God to Abraham, that "in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
